Associations Now recently published an article focused on updates to the ASAE Certified Association Executive credential requirements.
According to ASAE, The Certified Association Executive (CAE) credential is the marker of a committed association professional who has demonstrated a wide range of knowledge essential to manage an association in today’s challenging environment.
CAE exam content is analyzed and updated every five years by the CAE Commission. In response to an increase of ethics scandals in for-profit and non-profit organizations, an ethics credit has been added to renewal requirements. The requirement will be included in the current, requisite 40-hour renewal cycle. It takes effect in 2020.

Additionally, the experience requirement for C-suite leaders has been reduced. Previously it was three years; the updated standards have reduced that to one year. The change applies specifically to C-suite professionals. The five-year requirement for personnel outside of the C-suite will remain the same.
The logic behind the change is to recognize that professionals with CAE-applicable experience that have moved to the C-Suite level shouldn’t delay CAE credentialing. Additionally, the goal is to broaden the applicant pool for organizations seeking CAE credentialed leadership.
