Conference: ARVO 2019

Venue: Vancouver Convention Centre

City: Vancouver, British Columbia

Following the ARVO Foundation Gala on Saturday evening, ARVO 2019 begins on Sunday morning with an opening keynote featuring Randy Schekman.  The Nobel laureate and professor of cell and developmental biology at University of California at Berkeley will discuss his work in addressing serious diseases that affect the eye and vision. Also on the agenda:

Adventure time. Attendees can play Eye-Venture by visiting different locations throughout the conference and collecting buttons. Once they have seven different buttons in hand, they will be entered into a drawing to win prizes, including free registration to ARVO 2020 in Baltimore.

Coffee talk. Attendees can sign up for Breakfast With an Expert on Tuesday morning. They’ll have the chance to dine and talk with leaders about relevant topics related to the industry and career advancement, including running a successful research lab, taking charge of advancing your career, and applying to ophthalmology residency programs.

Social savvy. If attendees are looking to learn how to use social media to increase their science communication abilities, then they should check out “Social Media for Scientists.” ARVO staffers will be on hand to teach the ins and outs of using platforms like LinkedIn and Instagram both professionally and personally.
