Association Brain Food Weekly: 3.1.19

Free professional development resources and events for CAEs, association staff and others in the association community

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

Free professional development resources and events for CAEs, association staff and others in the association community

I’m a Squiggle, what are you? At a session during the ASAE Technology conference, Tobin, Gretchen, Rhea, and Trevor (first name basis here) had us do a personality exercise based on our intuitive connection with one of four shapes. On the DelCor blog, Tobin (also a Squiggle) explains how you can use this exercise to reveal and mesh different project team personalities.

How’s your association’s relationship with your chapters? It depends, right? WBT Systems has an idea for you, actually, eight ideas for building educational partnerships with your chapters. I bet you hadn’t thought about some of these.

Another way to improve your relationship with chapters is to help them grow their membership. Billhighway suggests several resources and strategies a national association can provide to help chapters with member recruitment.

Your AMS’ member portal is first and foremost a member engagement tool, says MemberSuite, but they suggest several ways you can also use a portal to generate non-dues revenue.

An oldie but goodie from Tom Morrison on how his association tracks and scores member engagement. It doesn’t have to be difficult. When you see the kind of retention and revenue his association gets, you know he’s doing something (many things) right.

In the “this makes my brain hurt” department… Augmented reality (AR) will bring us the next big tech platform, says Kevin Kelly in Wired.

“Someday soon, every place and thing in the real world—every street, lamppost, building, and room—will have its full-size digital twin in the mirrorworld. For now, only tiny patches of the mirrorworld are visible through AR headsets. Piece by piece, these virtual fragments are being stitched together to form a shared, persistent place that will parallel the real world.”

And we need this why? I know, I know, the mirrorworld will spark innovations that will transform education, travel, healthcare, science, and who knows what else for the better. Hopefully. I’m starting to feel old.

Some quick hits before we get to the list of next week’s free webinars:

  • There’s been a decline in history majors at the very time we need more historical thinking to put our current world in perspective. Preach! (Eric Alterman, The New Yorker)
  • Read about the remarkable life of Margaret Rudkin, founder of Pepperidge Farm. (Mari Uyehara, Taste)
  • I’m a backyard birder. You can be one too. Start by getting to know these 15 common bird species. (Andrew Del-Colle, Audubon)

Now for the educational events scheduled for next week. If you have any free webinars or events coming up, please send me the link. I’ll be happy to feature it as long as it’s not product-centric.
