Association Brain Food Weekly: 11.29.19

Free professional development resources and events for CAEs, association staff and others in the association community

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

Free professional development resources and events for CAEs, association staff and others in the association community

Will I see you at ASAE TEC next week? For me, TEC is like a reunion, camp and retreat combined in one. If we haven’t met and you see me walking around, please introduce yourself, I’d love to meet you.

Association silos have been a topic of conversation for years now. They especially get in the way when you’re leading up a project, so thankfully WBT Systems suggests 11 catalysts for cross-departmental collaboration.

I continue to learn new things about the “bones” of an AMS, a technology I thought I knew enough about but apparently didn’t. MemberSuite describes the difference between real and pseudo SaaS AMS and suggests 12 questions you can ask a potential AMS vendor to find out what they’re really selling.

Dan Hickey at DelCor Technology Solutions explains how to avoid application sprawl by taking a strategic approach to Office 365.

Associations are not addressing the emotional minefield of work, says Amanda Kaiser at Kaiser Insights. She has a good point. Why don’t associations serve the whole person? Aren’t personal & professional lives intertwined for many? Doesn’t one affect the other?

William D. Pawlucy at MultiBriefs shares ten things associations should start and stop doing in 2020. I especially like his “stop doing” list.

Quick hits before we get to next week’s free webinars:

  • Why was Paula Deen allowed to be the authority on Southern cooking for over a decade? Seriously, ugh. (Lauren Michele Jackson, Eater)
  • West Virginia inmates will be charged by the minute to read e-books on tablets. How ridiculous, taking away something that can transform a person—reading. (C.J. Ciaramella, Reason)
  • I can’t stop watching this, one of the oddest (and funniest) sports interviews I’ve ever seen. “Lead (or take) a horse to the water” will never be the same. (Harlequins Rugby League)

Good eats:

  • I have a ton of daikon radish in the frig from our CSA share. I figured they would keep well while I decided what to do with them. We liked these spicy roasted daikon radish fries although only the skinniest ones got crispy. Feeling lazy, I used ground ginger instead of fresh.
  • Seeing this photo of ham steaks with juniper cream sauce on the Taste site, I just had to try the recipe. The recipe says to strain the sauce, which I did, but the sauce in the photo is not strained, bait and switch! Seriously, the sauce was delicious when combined with the ham. Sherry vinegar makes a huge difference, keep some in your cabinet.
  • Growing up in southeastern MA, I have always loved our native fruit, cranberries. This King Arthur Flour recipe for Nantucket cranberry cake is easy to make for dessert—or snacking.
  • I’ve been holding onto three Seminole pumpkins, waiting to be inspired. This weekend I came upon the idea of stuffing and roasting them. I used mushroom, spinach, onion, bacon, garlic, bread, egg, cream, gruyere and parmesan in my stuffing, a riff on Dorie Greenspan and Ciao Chow Linda.
  • Have you ever made French toast in a sheet pan? So much easier! Spray pan. Pour custard mixture into pan. Arrange bread slices. Then flip each one over in the order you placed them. Let sit to absorb custard. Bake on lower rack at 425 for 10-15 minutes. Transfer pan to upper rack and broil a few minutes until done. The March/April 2019 issue of Cook’s Illustrated has the recipe.

Here are the educational events scheduled for next week. If you have any free webinars or events coming up, please send me the link. I’ll be happy to feature it as long as it’s not product-centric.
