Giving those who are not CEOs or senior staff the opportunity to participate. I’m sure lower level staff can contribute to the conversation as well if not better than the CEO. This must become the mindset moving forward. This conference becomes part of the regular ASAE schedule.

However, take the time to attend a session about a subject you’re not familiar with. A good association professional is a well-rounded one.

I had to miss most of the closing session but was happy to see my former association’s CEO Arlene Pietranton become Chair-elect of the ASAE Board and Chair of the Foundation. I know politics isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but I saw the Carville/Rove interaction for what it was: two men putting on a show for the audience.

My current employer, the American Psychological Association (APA), is led by its CEO, Dr. Norman Anderson, an African-American man. Robinson, an African-American man and one of several individuals of color who have held this position. My department, the Public Interest Directorate, is led by Dr. Gwen Keita, an African-American woman.
