Association Brain Food Weekly: 5.8.20

Free professional development resources and events for CAEs, association staff and others in the association community

UPDATED 5-11-20… look for “NEW” in front of date

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

Free professional development resources and events for CAEs, association staff and others in the association community

Chapter virtual events. Chapters have always had the face-to-face advantage but now even they must get on the virtual bandwagon. Billhighway describes the kind of resources you can provide chapters to help them get started with virtual events, design engaging programs, prepare speakers and attendees, and put together a virtual event volunteer team.

Student/fraternal chapters. Will college students return to campus this fall? Who knows! If you have student chapters, WBT Systems shares some ideas for creating a virtual fraternal or student chapter experience.

Engaging virtual events. I just now left the Non Dues-A-Palooza virtual happy hour to finish writing this post (dedication!) and I can tell you, NDP Live was not a boring online event. However, if you’re planning a virtual event, Jess Sousa explains why online events are (usually) boring and how to make them better.

Virtual conference networking. One of the reasons NDP Live was an effective learning experience is because participants had a chance during the breakout sessions and post-event happy hour to share ideas. A critical component of any digital learning experience is connecting with others. In their most recent post, MemberSuite describes options for attendee networking at virtual events. Some may only apply to virtual campus platforms, but others make sense on any online platform.

Digital learning experiments. Associations now have permission to play with digital experimentation so take advantage, but keep this advice from Lowell Aplebaum, CAE, in mind: “If you want your digital learning experiences to stand out, they have to embrace adult learning approaches—specifically they have to be virtual-experiential and interactive.” Exactly.

Hunger. Food banks are helping to feed kids who normally rely on school breakfasts and lunches as their nutrition for the day. You can help these kids out—as well as all the people, young and old, who have been laid off or lost their business—by supporting your local food bank. Find yours on the Feeding America website. If you’re in North Carolina, I hope you’ll support the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina.

Quick hits before we get to the list of this week’s free education:

  • A parody screensaver for anxious times. (Zooooom.us)
  • Chill out by the stream of your choice, perhaps one in Texas, Colorado or elsewhere. (Yeti)

Good eats—skip down to the list of free webinars if you’re not into cooking. If you are, check out my weekly In The Kitchen posts for more.

  • Make a sauce, pesto or other condiment-type-thing once, then bring it back for encore performances, like striped mullet with chermoula or turmeric sauce. Or flounder with dill pesto—the pesto is returning tonight as an accompaniment for sautéed soft shell crabs, not that they need anything.
  • Let’s get something straight, I’ve always liked making bread, I’m not a pandemic-Johnettey-come-lately bread baker, although I encourage that trend and welcome all of you to our fold. This weekend we demolished a loaf of buttermilk honey bread, a recipe from The Bread Bible by Beth Hensperger, which is on sale for only $2.99 right now—Kindle version. And, thank god, I just learned today that my yeast order from King Arthur is on its way. Phew.
  • I dug out a bunch of wild salmon fillets from the deeps of our chest freezer to make salmon and bok choy green coconut curry—made mine with pac choi, a bok choy cousin. Dang, it was good, especially over the frozen cauliflower rice I forgot I had.
  • Sautéed greens are usually on our menu once a week. This week, the mix included kale, radish greens, turnip greens and green cabbage, along with bacon, spring onions, carrot, jalapeno, orange bell pepper, dried apricots and sliced almonds.
  • The highlight of the week might have been a cocktail, although the curry was right up there: retox cocktail featuring muddled jalapeño slices, maple syrup, lime juice (instead of lemon) and reposado tequila. On the side, Hickory Grove cheese from Chapel Hill Creamery was a nice balancing act to the tart heat.

Here are the educational events scheduled for next week. If you have a free webinar or event coming up, please send me the link before Wednesday evening the week before it’s scheduled. I’ll be happy to feature it as long as it’s not too product-centric.

Stay safe, stay well, take care.

After more than 20 years managing associations and restaurants, she's enjoying the good life as a ghostblogger and content marketing writer for the association community.
