Association Brain Food Weekly: 3.15.19

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

Back in my restaurant general manager days, I went through a serious bout of burnout. I pulled myself out of it by reading about leadership—educating myself and getting inspired to make some positive changes at work. WBT Systems explains this week how association membership can help professionals deal with burnout and provide a substitute for the 21st century scourge—workism. If only I knew enough to join the state restaurant association, my poor colleagues would have been spared from my toxic bitchiness.

Here’s a quick path to burnout: all the tedious tasks associated with certification processes, yuck, been there. MemberSuite describes the different ways technology can be used to save staff time and stave off frustration.

You know who else needs education, your chapter leaders and staff. Billhighway shares advice on ways your association can provide member recruitment training to chapters and affiliates. I especially love the Membership Minute idea—my colleague Gabrielle Alahouzos created one for our state and local affiliates back in the day at the National Association of Home Builders. I learned so much from it (her)!

Wes Trochlil is another person you can learn a lot from. Multiview shares his ten important rules for managing association data.

Some quick hits before we get to the list of next week’s free webinars:

  • Five reasons why the US should stay on daylight saving time permanently. Please. (Quartz)
  • After Bourdain’s suicide and many others in the Sacramento culinary community, Patrick Mulvaney, owner of Mulvaney’s B&L in Sac, is mobilizing to create a safety net for chefs. (Civil Eats)
  • Years ago, my sister-in-law’s dad brought us to a place in Port Townsend, Washington where he said we’d have the best clam chowder of our lives. Being from Massachusetts, we scoffed at such a ridiculous statement. My god, he was right. I immediately found the recipe for Fin’s (RIP) clam chowder but never got around to making it until this past weekend when I received 30 Littlenecks in my seafood share. As good as I remember.
  • Hey all you Instant Pot fans, I’ve got a winner for you, this chicken and dumplings recipe from Sheri Castle’s Instantly Southern. Her beef stew is amazing too—I won’t use any other recipe from now on—as is the pork braised in a cider-gingersnap gravy, country captain, and jambalaya. Cooking my way through it.

Now for the educational events scheduled for next week. If you have any free webinars or events coming up, please send me the link. I’ll be happy to feature it as long as it’s not product-centric.
