Association Brain Food Weekly: 12.4.20

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

Urgent request for participation in an association professional development survey. Tagoras is running a brief survey to determine how organizations offering professional development will focus their time and resources in 2021. It includes questions about the impact of the pandemic on strategy, pricing, etc.

If you’re interested in how much emphasis other organizations will put on areas ranging from blended learning to microlearning to combating downward price pressure, this is data you will find valuable. Please participate—or ask the right person in your organization to participate—today because the survey closes at end of business today, Friday, December 4.

A message for the board. Imagine you’re an association board member and you read this from the CEO:

“If we keep doing what we are doing, we won’t be doing this for much longer. If we change what we are doing, there is a chance we will have a chance.”

This imaginary message for the board—written by Amanda Kaiser of Kaiser Insights—isn’t just a necessary slap of reality, it also asks for the board’s trust as staff experiments with going down a new path, not the same old safe path, so the association can continue to meet member needs. It’s a message worth sharing with your board.

Launching a DEI program. Tim Hopkins at McKinley Advisors shares lessons learned from launching a DEI program at the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC). I especially love the last two lessons: track metrics that matter and share guidance with your industry. In IAFC’s case, they provided a guide to help fire departments integrate DEI into their processes.

Event and learning data. Data can lead you down unexpected and profitable trails, says WBT Systems, and help you build a business case for a bigger professional development budget. Their post describes four ways your association can leverage event and learning data to increase attendance, select content, improve programs and grow revenue.

Virtual conference design. Dave Lutz of Velvet Chainsaw Consulting says many professionals “will not participate six to eight hours a day for your three-day virtual conference” so “don’t take the same old face-to-face agenda and try to plug it into a virtual platform.” Amen, brother. He shares ideas to get you started with 2021 conference planning.

Raising sponsorship prices. Dr. Michael Tatonetti, CAE, explains how to overcome your colleagues’ (or leadership’s) fear of raising sponsorship prices—an argument that gets into goals, costs and value.

Support your local food bank. Since spring, my local food bank has distributed double the amount of food they usually do because of the unrelenting demand caused by the economic impact of the pandemic. Please consider finding and supporting your local food bank. Many of them have matching campaigns during the holiday season so the impact of your donation might be doubled or tripled.

Quick hits before we get to the list of next week’s free education:

  • Lots to chew on here… ten, really eleven, big changes for events coming in the years ahead. (Don Neal, 360 Live Media)
  • Cautionary tale… why you need a backup for your backup. How the Michigan SAE lost their website when their hosting company fell victim to ransomware. (Donna Oser, CAE)
  • How the American Anthropological Association created a successful virtual internship program. (Palmyra Jackson and Katie Patschke, ASAE)
  • All aboard for a slow, and I mean slow, reindeer sleigh ride with a Sami guide across the frozen wilderness of Norway. It’s relaxing in an odd way. (BBC Four via Hydro Looper)

Good eats—skip down to the list of free webinars if you prefer take-out. If you’re a home cook, check out the weekly In The Kitchen posts on my Grabbing the Gusto blog.

  • Since Jim and I were on our own for Thanksgiving, we enjoyed a different kind of feast. I started with North Carolina oysters on the half shell while making a few sides and our appetizer, shrimp cocktail. Wow oh wow, I love my new approach to shrimp cocktail. I poached NC shrimp in a strained court bouillon, keeping the broth under 170°F, per this recipe, then chilled them, in sandwich bags, in an ice bath. Cocktail sauce (heavy on the horseradish) on the side. I saved the court bouillon and have been enjoying warm mugs of it—having some right now as a matter of fact.
  • We had cranberry ginger chutney alongside Jim’s slow-and-low grilled venison roast (swoon!) because it’s not Thanksgiving without cranberries. My adapted version includes jalapeño and tons more ginger.
  • On the side, roasted Brussels sprouts with red onion, bacon, maple syrup and balsamic vinegar, and mashed potatoes.
  • Later in the weekend, I steamed the rest of the oysters for both of us and served them with brown butter mixed with hot sauce and lemon juice. The leftover brown butter sauce made an encore appearance on baked sheepshead fillets—now, that’s a tasty fish.
  • The weekend feasting continued with a roast beef dinner—my second time following this recipe, it’s a keeper. I forgot about drying the beef out in the refrigerator, couldn’t tell the difference, and added garlic powder to the rub. On the side, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes and roasted carrots with garlic powder, ancho chile powder and cinnamon.

Here are the educational events scheduled for next week. If you have a free webinar or event coming up, please send me the link before Wednesday evening the week before it’s scheduled. I’ll be happy to feature it as long as it’s not too product-centric.
