Wooden dock emerging from the tall grass on the side of a lake at sunset or sunris – inspiration for a weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community

Member behavior. WBT Systems was inspired this week by the latest news about muons—subatomic particles influenced by unknown forces so they don’t obey the standard laws of physics. WBT speculates about the invisible forces affecting your members, causing irregular or new behavior, and disturbing the regular attraction between them and your association.

Education programs. Ernie Smith at Associations Now shares advice from Jeff Cobb (Leading Learning) on rethinking your association’s education model to meet member expectations and organizational needs. You won’t be successful unless you understand the principles of effective adult learning. Jeff suggests learning formats you might want to consider.

Virtual event engagement. The Virtual Events Institute asked several experts for tips on virtual event engagement. I liked this one from Jyrki Paananen, co-founder and COO of Brella, who said, “There’s almost an inflated volume of virtual events at the moment and it is challenging to make content the differentiator, so perhaps connections could be the new king.”

Aspiring Black women executives. In the Harvard Business Review, Stephanie Bradley Smith explains how a lack of sponsorship can prevent Black women from getting into the C-suite. She also suggests what can be done to propel more Black women into the higher echelons of corporations—advice that applies to associations too.

Digital accessibility. Accessibility is inclusion, says Fionta, and if you’re not focusing on it, you’re preventing people from accessing your resources and participating in your programs, events, services, and membership benefits. They share a bunch of resources to help you get up to speed on what you need to do to become a truly inclusive association.

Quick hits

  • Strategies for getting out of a negative thought spiral and into a more productive state of mind. (Katie Redderson-Lear, Fast Company)
  • What’s at stake when you don’t unplug from your screens: the truth about tech creep and workdays that don’t end. (Marina Khidekel, Thrive Global)

Good eats

Skip down to the list of free webinars if you prefer takeout. If you’re a home cook, check out the weekly In The Kitchen posts on my Grabbing the Gusto blog.

  • With two pounds of flounder in the freezer, I decided to make enough flounder piccata to last at least two nights. I give myself extra points if there are plenty of leftovers for a few lunches—there was. I love piccata sauce—lemon juice, white wine, butter, capers, and parsley. On the side, pearl couscous and zucchini pesto with onion, red bell pepper, slow-roasted tomatoes, poblano pepper, and extra parmesan.
  • I went through a lot of lemons this past week. We had baked black sea bass topped with lemon juice, thyme, Aleppo pepper, and butter. Another night, we split some steamed oysters, dipping them in a sauce made of lemon juice, brown butter, and hot sauce.
  • I rely on roasted vegetables on busy weeknights and, lately, herbes de Provence too. We had roasted asparagus with lemon zest, parmesan, and herbes de Provence one night, and roasted broccoli with the same combo the next night.

Here are the educational events scheduled for next week. If you have a free webinar or event coming up, please send me the link before Wednesday evening the week before it’s scheduled. I’ll be happy to feature it as long as it’s not too product centric.
