Communication is an important activity of any association. You seek to inform members, members provide feedback, the association’s mission is conveyed to the general public, and so on. With the opportunities and avenues for communication greatly expanded by the internet, now is the perfect time for the 64th annual International Communication Association Conference.

Set to be held in Seattle May 22-26, this year’s event focuses on “Communication and the ‘Good Life'”—including what pluses and minuses come along with the so-called “good life.”

“In a world where we have to be—or feel we have to be—constantly available and present, we might well ask if our contemporary communicative practices facilitate or rather undermine our capacity to partake in physical and psychological recreation, to either engage with or withdraw from the public and social arena as we wish, and to freely disconnect from the obligations and constraints of everyday life,” the association says in its conference preview.

Though that may seem like in-the-clouds musing, the events planned during ICA’s conference hold the promise of practical application to a number of communication issues facing the association space. What are the platforms you should be focusing your efforts on? How can your association best capitalize on the mobile era? What’s the latest in communications science and theory?

The Week Ahead

May 19-22: Take a break from conferences focused on terrestrial life and step into the Space Symposium. Celebrating its 30th anniversary in Colorado Springs, Colorado, one of the premier events for commercial, civil, and military space experts is still open for registration.

May 19-21: The American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists is holding its National Biotechnology Conference in San Diego, focusing on biomanufacturing, biomarkers, immunogenicity, and other topics at the cutting edge of their complex field.

May 17-20: Restauranteurs, buyers, vendors, and keynote speaker Magic Johnson (who has been in the news this week, by the way) will congregate in Chicago for the National Restaurant Association’s NRA Show 2014. And for those more interested in beverages, the International Wine, Spirits & Beer Event will also take place May 18-19 in the Windy City.

Down the Line

June 24-25: It’s not long until the first Cannabis Business Summit, a coming-out party of sorts for the National Cannabis Industry Association. The event will be held in Denver, a hub of the rising legalized marijuana industry.
