We Asked, You Answered: Sharing Holiday Cheer

’Tis the season for festive holiday parties, office potlucks, and cookie exchanges. Of the million ways to share holiday cheer with your association colleagues, what’s your favorite?

The holiday season can be the most fun time of the year in the office. Some organizations go all out with decorations and parties, while others do charity drives and host dinners. No matter what you choose, the holidays are a great opportunity for team bonding and letting everyone know how much you appreciate their hard work over the last year.

We asked a variety of association pros how their offices get into the holiday spirit. If you haven’t started thinking about your company’s festivities yet, these ideas may inspire you.

Jennie Olson

Staff Accountant, Brewers Association

Every year, we participate in the Toys for Tots program—an organization that collects donated toys and distributes them to kids within our community. It’s so much fun seeing all the different toys everyone in the office buys for the kiddos. We usually set a goal and if we make it, we’ll celebrate with a happy hour at a local brewery!

Cynthia Mikol-Twiss

Marketing Director, AdvantageCS

At our company, the activity most popular with employees by far is Pajama Day, where staff can wear flannel jammies and slippers, and we have hot cocoa and cookies in the afternoon.

Liz Novak

Government Relations and Publications, International Association of Plastics Distribution

We started doing a Secret Santa last year, and it was so much fun. Each staff member is matched up with someone else to be their Secret Santa. In the weeks leading up to The Big Reveal during our holiday party, the Secret Santas leave small, fun, often handmade gifts for their person. For example, my person last year is really into CrossFit, so I found a CrossFit puzzle for her. To help the Secret Santas, we all fill out a survey that asks for our likes and dislikes. It was fun trying to guess who each person’s Secret Santa was!

Ally Barbour

Communications/Media Manager, Independent Insurance Agents of Virginia

We do 12 Days of Giveaways! Each day there is a gift, and we draw names out of a pot for it. Once your name gets drawn, you get taken out of the pot until the 12th day, when the gift is bigger and everyone goes back in.

Laura Matteo

Web Content Specialist, NASFAA

We do a holiday White Elephant. Everyone participates by bringing a $15 gift, and then we take turns picking out new gifts or stealing them from other coworkers. It’s a riot and a fun, inexpensive way to build relationships.
