Best Benefit Ever: Helping Members With Their Mothers

The American Bar Association has ruled that its members should have some help appreciating their moms on Mother's Day.

What is it? Mother’s Day is this weekend, and there are bound to be plenty of busy lawyers who have yet to decide how to show their appreciation for everything Mom has done over the years. That’s where the American Bar Association comes in. We cover an array of perks in Best Benefit Ever, from salary comparisons to legal advice, but sometimes a simple discount is what members really want. The ABA’s latest benefit is a simple, well-timed discount: All members receive 20 percent off of purchases made on 1-800-Flowers.com, making that Mother’s Day gift a bit more affordable or allowing for a bit more extravagance.

Why it works: The 1-800-Flowers member discount is good year round, but its debut this week succeeds on two fronts. First, it’s another discount to add to the ABA’s existing suite. Second, it provides a timely opportunity to remind members of the value they receive with their continued membership.

Other benefits: ABA does a good job of presenting benefit offerings to its three main audiences. First are individual members, who benefit from discounts, professional development and training. Next, there are the benefits to the profession, such as lobbying and thought leadership. Finally, there are the benefits to society, in the form of work on global human rights and legal systems in developing countries.
