Membership Hack: Summer Reading List

A curated list of member-recommended books keeps members of the National Association of Colleges and Employers learning all summer long.

How to hack it? Summer reading is a standard feature of the season for many elementary and high school students, and members of the National Association of Colleges and Employers commit to it each year too. Members crowdsource book titles using a discussion thread in NACE’s online member community, and staff curates those recommendations on the career development page of the association’s website.

“Our members are invested in their professional development, and reading is one of the ways they build their expertise and gain insight,” says Mimi Collins, NACE director of content strategy.

Why does it work? The reading list keeps members engaged and actively learning in the summer. “The benefit to having the [online] NACE Community is that it enables our members to share their information with each other, to learn from each other, to network, and to build their professional community,” Collins says.

What’s the bonus? At the same time, NACE uses book suggestions for content development purposes. “The community is a rich source of content and an avenue for identifying sources [and] subject matter experts that we can then approach for articles, interviews, and professional development offerings,” she says.
