Conference Circuit: Agriculture and Economics

The Agricultural and Applied Economics Association’s 2019 Annual Meeting begins this weekend in Atlanta. Attendance is expected to top 1,400.

More than 1,400 agricultural and applied economists from around the world are headed to Atlanta to hear about the field’s latest research, network with peers, and celebrate the accomplishments of industry leaders.

Organization: Agricultural and Applied Economics Association

Conference: 2019 AAEA Annual Meeting

Venue: Atlanta Marriott Marquis

City: Atlanta

Following preconference workshops and committee meetings, AAEA 2019 kicks off Sunday evening with a welcome reception and keynote address. Pamela Roland, professor and founding director of the Institute for Food and Agricultural Literacy at the University of California, Davis, will discuss plant genetics and the future of food. Also on the agenda:

Lightning fast. Each 90-minute Lightning Session includes eight selected paper presentations. Each presenter will have 10 minutes or less to present and discuss their paper, allowing attendees to hear multiple takes on a specific research topic.

Smarty pants. More than 100 undergraduate students will gather at the annual meeting to participate in the Academic Bowl. Teams of three will compete by answering questions in eight categories, including microeconomics and agricultural business. The winning team takes home $500.

Spreading the news. While AAEA members can be hesitant to speak with reporters about their research, the “Working With the Media” session will teach them how to effectively speak to a broader audience. They’ll also get advice from members who are well-versed in giving interviews.
