'Last week, pop parodist “Weird Al” Yankovic took over the internet with a series of clever music videos. Behind those videos, however, was the kind of online content marketing strategy we’re all trying to create for ourselves. On Friday, I successfully got an unusual pitch through the Associations Now editorial machine: A bit on Taylor Swift, album sales, and where her opinions on the industry dovetail with those of the Recording Industry Association of America.

'As I posted back on June 29, our panel at the upcoming ASAE Annual Meeting (#ASAE14) will present case studies on Why Boards Fail and How to Fix Them. One of our challenges is to gather reasons for board failures, sort them, rank them and determine which to focus on during our 60-minute session (10:30 - 11:30 am, Tuesday, August 12). Our panel decided to start by crowd-sourcing the reasons boards fail.

'Though organizations that produce nonprofit software have long been granted tax-exempt status, the Internal Revenue Service recently denied it to two applicants. One had waited more than four years for a determination—and found the reasons for denial alarming. The tax-status headaches that have dogged politically oriented nonprofits appear also to be giving the open-source community a migraine.

'Complete with clever name, a new group in the crypto-currency industry hopes to help push “smart regulation” of Bitcoin in Washington. It isn’t the only player in the game, though. Watch out, U.S. Chamber of Commerce—you now have a Bitcoin-savvy namesake. Last week, the Chamber of Digital Commerce, a lobbying group for the crypto-currency industry, launched in Chicago with the goal of giving the Bitcoin movement a consistent voice in Washington.
