Conference Circuit: Local Government Managers

The International City/County Management Association’s 2019 Annual Conference begins next week in Nashville. Attendance is expected to top 3,000.

More than 3,000 local government managers and their staffs from around the world are headed to Nashville to discover tools and strategies for making their communities a better place to live, work, and play.

Organization: International City/County Management Association

Conference: 2019 ICMA Annual Conference

Venue: Music City Center

City: Nashville

ICMA 2019 officially starts Sunday afternoon with an opening general session featuring keynoter Jake Wood. The cofounder and CEO of Team Rubicon will discuss how the nonprofit, which recruits, trains, and sends military veterans to disaster zones around the world, has scaled to 100,000 volunteers and deployed teams to some of the worst catastrophes of the century.  Also on the agenda:

Roundup. The conference’s series of roundtable discussions offers attendees an opportunity to meet face to face and share ideas, opinions, and solutions on a variety of important topics. Each discussion will be facilitated by an ICMA member or other expert with a strong interest or experience in these nuts-and-bolts issues.

Out and about. Field demonstrations and site visits will give attendees the chance to see the most innovative local government projects in the Nashville area. Options include a tour of the Gulch, a dynamic, mixed-use LEED-certified community in the city, or a visit to Franklin, which is known for its “lovingly preserved downtown.”

Get active. Attendees who want to get some exercise are in luck. ICMA is offering a number of options, including a 5K run/walk, a hike in Radnor Lake State Park, and yoga. Plus, instead of a traditional golf tournament, a trip to Topgolf is on the agenda.
