Association Brain Food Weekly: 12.9.16

holiday inspiration - poinsettias by Peter Miller

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…Christmas, Hanukkah, frosty nights, comfort food, warm fires, cozy slippers, wool sweaters, and ASAE Tech. Huh?

One of those things doesn’t belong, you say? Well, it does in my world and the world of my fellow association tech geeks – you know who you are. It’s a crazy time of year for a conference but somehow that makes it even more special. We’re committed to our community.

I’ve been harping on ASAE exhibitors the past few years to step up their email marketing game. Judging from the ones I’ve received so far from Tech exhibitors, my success rate doesn’t look so good. I’m not giving up on you. You still have a chance to make a good impression (or a bad one) with your post-show email.

On Pearl Harbor Day this week, Jim and I were invited by our neighbor to join his veterans group for their Christmas lunch. The guest speaker was George Cattelona, a World War II vet who fought in the battle of Iwo Jima. If you have a veteran in your life, share this article about George with them and see if they might be willing to share a bit about their experience.

A few months ago while interviewing two hospice volunteers, both Korean War vets, for an article about vet-to-vet hospice volunteer programs, I heard the same advice. “Too often, honor and recognition for a veteran is only heard at their memorial service…Gather friends and family to celebrate the story of the veteran in your life while they’re still alive to appreciate it.”

Ok, on to the list of this week’s free webinars and learning events. If your organization has a webinar scheduled in the next few weeks, please send me the link. I’ll be happy to feature it as long as it’s not too product-centric.
