Ah, Friday, and a long weekend too for many of you. Not for me – too much work to do – a good thing, so trust me, I’m not complaining. I’ll make room for enough down time to feel recharged on Monday morning, in case you care. Caring is in the air, you know, or it should be, we can make it so…. The world needs more “everyday mundane acts of caring” like the ones John Haydon shares in his post, The #1 Paradigm Shift You Need to Make in 2013.

Decision Weasels in Associations

Association Subculture

I love this Dilbert cartoon. It's been sitting on my desktop for a few months now because it is such a good example of what I call "Decision Weasels." (I'll give a nod to Scott Adams and " The Way of the Weasel " which I am sure has inspired some of this post out of the depths of my memory.) I've met a few of them over my career. Decision weasels are usually in positions of power in our associations.

The Messy Unknown

Eric Lanke

image source This post got me thinking about the messy unknown, a term coined by Tom and David Kelley to describe the place outside your comfort zone. In the messy unknown, they say elsewhere , you have to deal with unexpected findings, with uncertainty, and with irrational people who say things you don't want to hear. But you must venture into this place, because in the messy unknown you also find insights and creative breakthroughs.

Friday Top 5

Thanks For Playing

For the self-employed, the end of January means time to pay quarterly and annual estimated business taxes. It's a lot of somewhat confusing forms (thank goodness I followed the advice to hire an accountant, because trying to do this myself would, no doubt, have driven me around the bend). And it's easy to be grouchy about writing the checks and scheduling the electronic payments.

Correlation versus Causation

Jamie Notter

My kids are in middle school and high school, and they were telling me this morning about one of their recent lessons about the difference between correlation and causation. Apparently you can show a statistically significant correlation between a decrease in highway traffic deaths and an increase in imports of Mexican lemons (who knew?!). But this is just correlation–it doesn’t prove causation.

Five Strategies To Improve The Common Conference Lecture

We talk so we can learn. But who does the majority of talking at a conference and who does the majority of listening? The speakers talk as the audience listens.

True Professionalism at an Association Management Firm

Association Navigator

I’ve just completed David Maister’s True Professionalism. Originally published in 1997 and still relevant today, it is the single best guide I’ve found so far to managing a professional services firm like Verto Solutions. The most concise part of the book is the table of Critical Business Processes of a Professional Firm. Most of Maister’s readers are probably lawyers, but on every page this book adds value to any professional providing business services.
