“NO vendors, please.”

Reid All About it

Every day in my association’s online community, people reach out to fellow members to ask questions or request guidance. Today I saw someone ask for examples of associations that have had proven success with social media. At the bottom of her request for help, she added three words – “NO vendors, please.”. I get why people say that. Too many clueless vendors use discussion forums for their own spammy self-interest.

The Power of the Beta

Thanks For Playing

One of the reasons we in the association world can be afraid to try new things is that we worry that if it's not perfect, the members will freak out. And for some of your members, that's probably true. But it's not true for all of them. Some of them would LOVE to be invited to sneak preview a new program, product, service, offer, etc. and provide their feedback.

Reid All About it

I lead off this week with a request to your heart. And wallet. Tonight, as you sit down to dinner, thousands of families in your area struggle to provide a nutritious meal to their kids. Food donations are decreasing , yet the number of adults and kids who go hungry every day is increasing. In an effort to raise awareness, funds, and food as part of Hunger Action Month , starting at 6pm tonight, the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina will stream live online for 24 hours from their w

Before I Die, I Want To.?

Honestly, it was impossible for me to watch this video today without becoming emotional. I couldn't help but think about my Grandpa Howard who I still miss so terribly. I carry a tattoo in his honor that serves as an ongoing reminder of how I want to live and, just as important, how I want to leave this world. This short but powerful video shows us an example of a simple, effective technique that we can use immediately in our staff, board, community or conference spaces.

Taking “High Performance” Seriously

Jamie Notter

I posted two weeks ago about the awesome slide deck that Netflix put up on SlideShare about their culture (that deck has been viewed 2.2 million times, by the way). My first post focused on only one of the seven points they make about their culture (“ Values are what we value “). Maddie then did a nice post about the Netflix view on the complementary nature of freedom and responsibility.

Across the nonprofit sector, organizations invest heavily in donor retention efforts, yet the struggle of cultivating lasting relationships remains. Facilitation Friday #35: The Power of Framing

How would the conversation be different if instead of talking about the elections in battleground terms, we spoke of it through the lens of the playground ? While some of the negative spirit might be retained (think recess bullies), I can't help believe some childlike curiosity, willingness to play with others, and free spirit might emerge. Though political campaigns are a timely illustration, we are too accustomed to using war metaphors and language to characterize so many regular events that d

Everyone Should Know What’s Valued

I am writing an article about re-thinking new employee orientation, and I came across something interesting at Zappos. I think everyone knows that Zappos and CEO Tony Hsieh (pronounced “shay” I am told) are frequently held up as role models when it comes to leadership, customer service, strong organizational culture, etc. In a recent blog post, Tony makes the argument that “ your culture is your brand ,” and he talks about how he creates the culture at Zappos.
