Membership IS the Value of Membership!

Association Subculture

So, I was one of the lucky ones who got to see Dave Grohl's new documentary " Sound City " last night at the Crest in Sacramento (and yay +Sandra Giarde was with me, Mark and Molly). And I CANNOT stop thinking about it. Dave expertly tells the story of the Sound City studio in Los Angeles that saw the birth of iconic album after iconic album. But at the end of the day this is a deeply human story about connection, friendship, creativity and the human struggle in the digital age.

Reads of the Week: February 1, 2013

Reid All About it

Steven Rosenbaum says, “ Stop knocking curation.” I agree. There’s a big difference between aggregation and curation. I can do without the daily paper.li aggregations. I rarely read them, even if one of my tweets is featured as a “top story.” Too many of them don’t have the human (or curator’s) touch. However, as Rosenbaum says, “Information overload drives content consumers to look for human-filtered, journalist-vetted, intellectually-related material.

5 Social Media Trends for 2013 that membership bodies should take note of

Optimist Consulting

I think that these trends will influence the way we live in 2013, which in turn could result in increased expectations from members of their membership body. Are you ready? 1. Social content will be king. Good content has always been important to help with your SEO, but with the preferential placing of Google+ pages in search results, social content is now affecting where your organisation will appear in the search rankings.

What I'm Reading

Thanks For Playing

Big list this week. Hey, lots of people have been writing interesting stuff! Marketing Profs picked up Maddie Grant and Jamie Notter's survey on new leadership skills for the social media age (and wrote a really nice article about it). Speaking of Jamie, he just released a new white paper, in which he applies the Humanize principles to the real-world problem of performance reviews (spoiler alert: it's the first in a series that's going to do this).

It’s Now a Leader’s Job to Understand Social Media

Association Leaders

Great leaders don’t need to know everything about everything. However, they do need to know something about everything. Claiming ignorance is not okay anymore for a leader. What a leader doesn’t know can hurt them and their organization. Here’s an article demonstrating what I’m talking about. It seems during a Today Show episode, there was a conversation about social media during which the TV reporters (leaders) claimed ignorance regarding social media.

IGNITE: Hack to Innovate

Invest five minutes in this outstanding IGNITE presentation from Jason Lauritsen on how hacking leads to innovation, and why, as a result, we shouldn't fear the concept. I particularly love his "is it hackable?" matrix, which comes down to the simple question: "Is it awesome?" If the answer is yes, you're done. If the answer is no, you have work to do.

MemCom Awards – could you be a winner?

Optimist Consulting

As you may know, MemCom organises the annual awards for the membership industry. They are the only dedicated membership awards in the UK. I attended the event last year. In addition to a great membership focused conference it was brilliant to see membership bodies being recognised for their hard work at the awards ceremony. You can see the Institute of Fundraising celebrating one of their wins on the right (picture from MemCom).

The Silent Boss

Eric Lanke

image source Sometimes the best thing for a boss to say is nothing at all. Or more precisely, to clarify what is to be achieved, but to remain silent on how to achieve it. I consider my organization to be a "small staff" association. Others with one or two staff people may be envious of our ten staff positions, but I think of ten as small because it requires everyone to wear multiple hats, and to assume positions of team leadership for different projects at different times.

However, I know from my time my time working in membership bodies and latterly helping clients I know that it is really difficult to clean data. Does Your Association Website Need a Remodel Or a Redesign?

Vanguard Tech

We fielded a survey a few months ago to find out how often associations redesign their website and how they manage their sites. One of the most amazing things we found was this: Nearly 40% of associations have not updated their website design within the past three years! True, there is no exact rule of how frequently a site needs to be redesigned, but we believe three years is pushing the envelope.
