Color Me Impressed: The Smart Set for August 2011

Reid All About it

What’s the old saying? For every three people who praise your business, ten others complain about you? That may be hogwash, but I know from experience that the last thing a business owner wants is someone running their mouth off about a bad customer service experience, especially if we were never given the chance to make it right. Social media gives us a platform to b h about the ways we’ve been done wrong, and that negative buzz spreads quickly.

So often progress is blocked because the necessary conversation among the right people isn't happening. And that frequently happens because people assume others already know and are choosing not to do something about the concern in question, or because the people who can/need to change aren't being given the feedback that would lead th

Reflections on ASAE 11: The Sexiness of Unsexy Innovation

Guilt by Association

Exactly one week after ASAE’s annual meeting, the line that’s sticking with me came from the final keynote speaker, Peter Sheahan: “Nine times out of 10, it’s the unsexy stuff where innovation happens.” That’s the game I’m playing right now. A few months ago, I was given an additional title: Chief Digital Strategist. No one ever had the title before, so I have the privilege of defining what that means.

Member Engagement and Retention

AssociCom

I’ve been involved as a volunteer in a few different associations of varying sizes. Membership growth seems to be a fairly universal concern — which is not surprising since an organization whose membership is in decline is facing extinction at some point in time. I’ve also noticed that many associations have a fair degree of churn in membership; they gain quite a few members each year, but they also lose quite a few.
