'So you’re thinking about hiring a consultant. How can you make sure the resources you’re investing in the relationship are well-spent? First question to ask yourself: should you be hiring a consultant at all? If you need the expertise all the time, and it’s a key skill of your members, use volunteers. If you need the expertise all the time, and it’s something that is a staff core competency, hire or train for it.

'Photo courtesy of myjoboption.com. Not that long ago, interns were known as the coffee getters, copy makers and phone answerers. In other words, the grunt workers. Or office gophers, perhaps. Thankfully, those days are gone (for the most part). Now, interns are treated as valuable members of the team, often attending meetings, working on projects and managing social media accounts.

'Walt Disney is widely regarded as having been a great leader. Having never met Mr. Disney, I certainly cannot speak directly to that. However, the business he created is still thriving today – largely because of the ideals he instilled in his business and his employees. I read an interesting article about Mr. Disney and a book written by a long-time former employee and Disney executive recently. .

'We all want cohesive teams, and to get them, I hear a lot about shared vision. The leader is responsible for providing a clear vision for the team, and once everyone is on board with this singular vision, the team performance starts to flow. It’s awesome. We’re all on the same team, we’re all rowing in the same direction, we’re all on the same page, [add metaphor of your choice here].

'It seems like I have this conversation about once a week: Me: Hi, nice to meet you. How can I help you change the world with a new website for your association? Client/Prospect: Hmm. Changing the world is nice. What I really care about is how fast you can design and launch my new site. M e: Well, it depends. Your site looks like it has around 1,500 pages so that will take a while.

'Failing careers advice. A recent Ofsted report highlighted that many schools do not provide adequate careers advice to pupils. The provision of careers advice became the responsibility of individual schools from last year. My own experience of careers advice at school (a while ago now!) wasn’t great. The computer programme they used suggested I might be a good TV aerial erector – I kid you not!

Now, in defense of the person who wrote it, we use our blog to talk about things that are new and exciting about the industry our association represents. Our target audience is not our members, but the engineers and technicians that may choose to use our members'' products in their designs.

'Is the label “young professional” harmful or helpful? It probably depends on when and where it is used, according to a group of YPs who discussed its implications at ASAE’s NextGen Summit. At the end of the day, I don’t know that it matters what we call ourselves or what our associations call us. … It probably matters, more than anything, what we do.

'Conference audiences of days gone by were satisfied with the gathering of colleagues, a mediocre experience and a few useful tips. Today’s audiences are more demanding and sophisticated. They expect to learn practical and useful information that solves their individual problems. They expect speaker presentations that are compelling and memorable. And they expect to be entertained while having fun.

'By adding key benefits requested via member feedback, the American Counseling Association has sustained growth for several years. Now it’s turning to data-based segmentation to keep the streak alive. Think back to March 2011. That was the month when an earthquake and tsunami struck Japan and when the NFL lockout began. 'Many of us are looking for the next, big, shiny new technology tool. Yet the noise about new technologies makes it very difficult to identify which tools really matter. The parade of new technologies and advances is persistent. So many new apps or tools appear on the world stage that we often feel overwhelmed about where to look and which to try. Some rise to the top and seem to gain public acceptance fast.

Nearly 40 percent of respondents to the latest Association Adviser poll say their membership has grown over the past three years, with nearly one in five respondents (18 percent) reporting robust membership increases of at least 10 percent. So that means the remaining 60 percent are in decline?

'Today, most conference audiences would prefer to engage in one-on-one peer-to-peer discussions than listen to another panel or lecture. It is also clear that employers today place more emphasis on securing employees that are good at engaging others in face-to-face interactions to problem solve, work together and interpret data. Ultimately, peer learning is highly valued and needed in the 21st Century.

'Hank Berkowitz, Editor-in-Chief. As the old Groucho Marx line goes, “I wouldn’t belong to any club that would accept me as a member.” But that’s not the case in the association world, even as social media, the “free web economy” and for-profit competitors knock on the door. More than half of visitors to association websites are looking for career opportunities and resources.
