Today there is a fantastic membership recruitment opportunity for associations who are focused on their state advocacy efforts – and, things are moving fast. Corporations are intensely interested in what’s happening at the state level – whether it’s regulatory or legislative. One of the challenges for many associations is the ability to recruit large members and association prospects like these are really focused on the risks that they are facing here.
Immense member value has always been generated by federal government relations and advocacy, which are well established. But, how does your capacity on the state level compare?
Monitoring state and local legislative activity requires a solid infrastructure – unfortunately, many traditional associations don’t have a set-up in place. There has been an increase in the number of issues associations are tackling on the local level and these come up quicker than you might think. You don’t want to be caught with your guard down. The bottom line is if you don’t have bandwidth to effectively manage your state efforts, make it a priority to build it out.
This initiative will require you to cultivate stronger relationships with your state chapters and affiliates, as well as develop a much more adaptable state relations team. The state effort is a clear value proposition builder on so many levels.
I’m reminded of a great organization – the Distilled Spirits Council. They’re building out a fantastic state legislative tracking system. And people are joining just because of this service. This move is a big deal and an example of a new differentiator.
The new frontier is at the state level and it’s really popping, folks. Here’s where we can demonstrate our added value and recruit more members.
