Goodbye 2014. Put it in the books. It has been a remarkable year with a number of highs and a few lows along the way. But isn’t that typical of almost every journey we go on? While I think we’re all ready for the “fresh start” the New Year affords us, it is also to pause for a moment and look back at the year that brought us here. So as a final toast to 2014, we look back at some of the ideas and strategies we shared with you the past 12 months.

'The champagne is chilling and we’re pumped to watch the ball drop as we find ourselves humming “Auld Lang Syne.”. Yep. 2015 is nearly here. Maybe not quite so exciting for event planners, however. We know: It’s crunch time for you. Time to book all your conferences and events and finalize the budget. The past few months have been a bit harried, no doubt.

'I am always thankful to get past December 31 of any year. It''s not because I hate New Year''s celebrations or all the talk about a clean slate, making resolutions, or starting a diet. January 1 means we have 360 days or so until charities and other nonprofits send out their well-intentioned, but often underwhelming last minute year-end solicitations.

'I wasn’t expecting 2014 to be a real transition year (I thought that’s what I had last year, actually, when I went back out on my own), but as soon as Maddie and I decided to launch a joint consulting firm together ( Culture That Works LLC ), our new directions picked up steam. We started getting more clients together (in addition to existing work we did separately), and also (as promised in last year’s post) started out on our next book together.

'At a time when “online security” reads like an oxymoron, a new study found that nonprofits that invest in website security and display security seals inspire more confidence with donors—which translates to more charitable donations. A small tweak in website design could lead to an increase in charitable donations, according to a new study out of Rutgers University-Camden.

'The Sun Sets on 2014. This year I took off a full two weeks during the holiday, spending time with family on the Big Island on a coffee farm and mostly offline. Here are two ways in which this happens. Should a board’s responsibility stop at the national border? While the staff is usually the first to see market growth opportunities, boards rightfully see themselves as custodians of their association’s resources and representative of the interests of current members.

'I spotted this quote in the local paper this weekend: “Money is like manure. If you pile it up, it stinks. If you spread it out, it makes things grow.” – Peter Kleist (I also see this quote attributed to J. Paul Getty.) It made me think of a quote from a board member 30 years ago: “Nothing ruins a good organization like too much money. – Wilf Illingworth In my nearly 40 years experience in associations and nonprofits, I’ve found both to be true.
