Reid All About it

Google Reader is where I go first thing in the morning for my professional reads about associations, marketing, digital media, technology, etc., and at the end of the day for my personal reads about food, culture, etc. I have hundreds of RSS subscriptions in dozens of Reader folders. Yes, I find a lot to read on Twitter, but its randomness, although appreciated, is no substitute for Reader.

Good Leaders are Creators, Not Critics

Association Leaders

I read an interesting article the other day about leadership. The article got me to think about my role as a leader in a different way than I previously had. Often we fall into the rut of thinking of leaders as “the boss” or “the manager” As managers, we encourage the rut by judging and criticizing the actions of our team without regard for how that judgement might affect the team as a whole.

We Shouldn’t Coddle Our Leaders

Jamie Notter

Leaders are an interesting bunch. And by “leaders,” in this case, I’m referring to the people at the top of the organizational chart. The C-suite folks. Generally speaking they’re impressive people. They’ve done a lot to move up the ranks to their position. They’re smart and sharp. They’re adept at making the right moves in complex systems.

Cultivating engagement: Let's talk about connections.

Idea Architects

Associations are communities of shared interests. To cultivate member engagement, we want to quickly welcome people to the community and help facilitate individuals connecting as fast as possible with those who share the interests they seek. People want to be a part of the action , and doing so increases engagement and a sense of connectedness. Ideally, every new member receives a welcome phone call within five business days of their application being received.

Cultivating engagement: what do you want to learn?

Idea Architects

One of the primary reasons people join professional associations is to learn something. When was the last time one of the organizations you've joined tried to learn about what you'd like to learn? When I think about my own learning, I divide it into two categories: (1) things I need to learn, and (2) things I want to learn. The things I n eed to learn are more critical to what I am trying to accomplish right now.

Cultivating engagement: how might you like to contribute?

In The Decision to Volunteer , one of the surprising findings (for some) was that association staff and board members often have a more limited definition of volunteering than the members. Staff and board members may focus more on those members serving in formal positions within the association's governance structure (i.e., newsletter editor). Members are more likely to include ad hoc contributions to getting the work done (i.e., writing for the newsletter).
