'Yep, it’s a year-end trends post. The thing I particularly like about this one, though, is that TechSoup looks at the tech trends we all know and love (mobile, the Internet of Things, cloud computing, social media, etc.) specifically through the lens of what’s relevant and appropriate in the nonprofit space. Which, as we know, is not always the same at the for profit space.

'For most of us Michiganders, this year’s Christmas celebrations were put on hold – or completely rearranged – thanks to Mother Nature’s icy fury. The hum of generators replaced the sounds of Christmas morning giggles in many homes. Christmas lights didn’t shine and instead of prime rib or turkey dinners, families ate at McDonalds or rescheduled for brighter (literally) days ahead.

'My mother-in-law sent an email to the family recently that really resonated with me. Maybe it was all the Holiday celebrating or the recent changes we’ve made in our business but I am feeling happier than I have in a few years. However, I have a long way to go to be as happy as I think I should be – and to make others around me happier as well.

'Guest Post, by Amanda Kaiser. We are all inundated with messages about “new marketing.” Experts tell us to try the new marketing strategies because the old are dead. In fact, just about every marketing tactic is changing: Print versus web. Traditional media versus social media. Push marketing versus pull marketing. Marketing messaging versus content marketing.

'At the approach of every new year, we look at our lives with special scrutiny to identify the things we think we must change in order to improve our lot in some way. We resolve to lose weight, learn a foreign language, or take up exercise as a way to prove our merit and grit. This year I resolve to honor my standards and stay true to my voice. 'photography by kris krüg. Most speakers are really good at talking! But talking to your audience does not mean that your audience is learning. Our Brains Have Limits. As speakers, we have assumed that talking to an audience results in their learning. We think that their minds are like sponges absorbing what we are saying. But just hearing information does not equal learning it.

'I discovered recently a fascinating website, The New Conversations Initiative. One key to rich conversation, the website highlights, is asking questions creatively. And this is what prompts this post: how can we change our questions to deepen our conversations in associations?

'Yes, it’s the annual year in review post! This has been a year of big change. In March I left my job of the last five years and went back out on my own, and this summer I sold my house of the last 17 years and have been thoroughly enjoying apartment living! Work-wise, I continue to do a lot of speaking, consulting, and writing on Humanize-related themes, though I have also continued a deepening focus on organizational culture.

'Is there a way associations can make sure they are living up to current attendee and exhibitor expectations and developing new audiences at the same time? Earlier this week as I was catching up on the meetings and tradeshow-related reading that I missed while out on vacation over the holidays, I came across an interesting article in the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

'In this and several upcoming posts, I want to share three resolutions you may want to consider for your membership marketing program in the New Year. The first resolution is to re-focus your efforts on planning, testing, and tracking. The basics of membership marketing are to create a plan, try new approaches, and track the results and your important membership data points.

'(Cross-posting from my new, cuter blog, Chic n'' Geek ) Ah, another year, another 50+ movies ( 55 , to be exact). Yes, it pains me to say that for the first time since I’ve done these movie wrap-up posts (can you believe it’s been six years?), I have fallen short of my goal of seeing more movies than I saw the preceding year. Far short. ELEVEN short, to be exact, as I saw 66 last year.

'DC''s Booking Boom It looks like other cities’ losses may be DC’s gain. With many Greater Washington-based organizations looking to stay closer to home, the District has seen federal spending on hotel rooms surge. Agencies spent $57.5 million on hotel contracts in DC in 2013, compared to just $2.7 million in 2010, according to a USA Today analysis.

'I have a couple of New Year’s rituals that help prepare me for a new year. These include a review of the year’s accomplishments and two techniques that help you focus on your goals: Peter Bregman’s theme for the year , and Chris Brogan’s “ My Three Words.” I also throughout the month of January review my work routines and systems and redesign or tweak to improve productivity.

'Photo by Notemily. As KD Paine and I wrote in “ Measuring the Networked Nonprofit ,” measuring your social media channels, overall communications or marketing strategy is not a form of voodoo black magic; it is an art and a science. The art part is how you articulate your organization’s measure of success and formulate strategies to realize that success.
