Before we assume that democracy is dead, associations need to figure out a way to engage all members across generations in their advocacy efforts in order to be successful. Young professionals should be engaged in advocacy even before they graduate. Others want to learn more about their chosen field and seek out job opportunities.

Out of that dialogue and data review, we worked with a consultant secured by ASAE to engage a diverse work group in a visioning dialogue and outlined the impact and accomplishments we wanted to see for ASAE and the association community in 3-5 years. The priorities include a focus on: Resources and Recognition.

We all want someone engaging, thoughtful and intelligent as speakers. In other words, teams with better name recognition have a greater chance of getting into a preferred bowl game than teams without. When we’re thinking about speakers for association conferences, are we following the same model?

As is often the case, the volunteers with whom I work on an ongoing basis are brilliant sources of ideas, opinions and feedback; however, where the rubber meets the road, engagement, commitment and actual work product are quick to wane. In fact, it’s often difficult to access these individuals between face-to-face meetings.

While your association may not have a Seth Rogen at their disposal, you do have members who are knowledgeable about the issues and can articulate them in a way that engage and inform. Heck, celebrity doesn’t even guarantee that someone can read. Once you find the right member, prep them for the congressional experience.

The talks given that night were funny, engaging, and thoughtful. It was here that I discovered something I already knew: I love everything about Ignite! Developing the topic, preparing the slides, practice rounds and finally, given the speech. Not something you can say about most presentations. So why should you do an Ignite?

The program is over 10 years old and the alumni are just as engaged and involved as the current class. MR: I wish I knew what a powerful, connected and engaged group I was joining so that I could have started networking with them SOONER! It’s refreshing to see this level of participation.
