Association Brain Food Weekly: 6.5.20

Free educational resources and events for CAEs, association professionals and others in the association community

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

Free educational resources and events for CAEs, association professionals and others in the association community

What a week. This tweet summed it up for me.

Free educational resources and events for CAEs, association professionals and others in the association community

It feels somewhat like that week in March when the impact of COVID-19 hit us all. It’s been hard to focus. I find myself staring blankly at whatever I’m writing while my mind is far away. Then I lose myself reading articles on Twitter or in newsletters, and, one of my favorite activities, compiling a list of more things to read.

I’m hopeful the peaceful protests have caused people, like me, to wake up, listen, read and think.

But I’m troubled.

I’m troubled by the murder of George Floyd, but I’m also troubled by the murder of David Dorn.

I’m troubled by the reactionary violence wielded by police and military forces on peaceful protesters and by a president who doesn’t have a clue.

I’m troubled by those who don’t believe in nonviolent resistance and the words of Dr. King.

I’m troubled by the destruction and looting causing pain for so many business owners and their families and employees.

I’m troubled by the excuses people make for that depravity.

I’m troubled by divisive rhetoric and people accepting slogans as truths.

I’m troubled by people clinging to narratives no matter what the facts are.

I’m troubled by influential people who have no knowledge of history and what it can teach us.

I’m troubled by people clinging to false histories and stereotypes.

I’m troubled by the horror of our real history.

I’m troubled by the persistent bias Black people (and other people of color) face every single day.

I don’t claim to know it all—as much as I’d like to—or have answers. The answers aren’t easy. Easy answers are usually just convenient ones. The work ahead is hard. Politicians and the mainstream media are lousy at the hard work of investigating, analyzing and interpreting complicated issues. Emotion sells better than reason. Many of them don’t dare step outside their approved talking points—so that troubles me too.

Some of you will think I don’t go far enough and some will think I go too far. I am, as usual, agreeing with opinions from all kinds of people, except the hateful ones. I long for more reason and love. I abhor violence of any kind and our streets and history are full of it. But our streets are full of love too and that gives me hope.

Ok, where were we? Oh yeah, pandemic, virtual conferences, faltering economy and all that.

Associations’ role in the COVID-19 gap year. High school graduates and college students still don’t know what they’ll be doing in the fall. Will their campus be open? Will they have online courses instead? What other options do they have? Ah, that’s where your association can step in, says WBT Systems. They suggest ways you can help students and recent graduates find purpose during the COVID-19 summer and gap year.

The chapter big pandemic picture. After “an intense two months of listening, researching, and writing about these new conditions” brought on by the pandemic, Billhighway shares their big picture thoughts and ideas about associations and their chapters.

What happens after your virtual conference. MemberSuite says, “The virtual conference is where the attendee experience begins, but not where it ends.” They explain how to extend the learning and networking experience for virtual conference attendees with post-event activities.

Virtual conference success story. Yesterday, #AAMvirtual, the American Alliance of Museums’ AAM Virtual Annual Meeting & MuseumExpo, wrapped up. This year’s theme was “radical reimagining”—how appropriate! AAM’s Twitter stream gives you a sense of the conference program.

Monday through Thursday, the program included keynotes and sessions, moderated chats, video-based happy hours, and networking events such as an LGBTQ+ Alliance networking social, emerging museum professionals happy hour and a virtual reception. They also promised “special guest appearances, giveaways, and museum spotlights.”

Parts of the program were open to anyone, no pass purchase required, such as the Virtual MuseumExpo (note the chat box on each page), virtual poster hall, and Museum Showcase—“our way of highlighting all of the incredibly generous San Francisco Bay Area museums [members] who have supported us—first with the in-person #AAM2020 conference & when we transitioned to #AAMvirtual.”

AAM also responded in the moment by scheduling a new general session, Racism, Unrest, and the Role of the Museum Field. When you’re virtual, you don’t have to worry about flying in and hosting speakers at the last minute.

Virtual conference of the week. The ATD Virtual Conference is also happening this week. Their FAQ describes the program. Even better, check out the attendee resources to get a feel for the experience—particularly, the orientation video. It looks like they’re using the Social27 platform, a new one for me. What intrigues me about this conference is:

  • Chat groups, centered around specific topics, ongoing throughout the conference
  • Ability to have one-on-one conversations
  • Solution sessions in which attendees “explore solutions and delve deep with some of our sponsors”
  • Interest and attendee match-making: “You’ll also be asked questions about your interests and experience, which will help match you with sessions you might like to see and with attendees who have similar interests.” (from the FAQ)
  • Connection Point: web page with news, session coverage and updates

Just one quick hit before we get to the list of this week’s free education—you  can always count on the birdies to refresh your soul, in this case, Savannah ospreys, big birdies.

Good eats—skip down to the list of free webinars if you’re not into cooking. If you are, check out my weekly In The Kitchen posts for more.

  • When I opened my CSA bag last week, I found a bunch of herbs that looked like a cousin of parsley but had an anise-like aroma. What the deuce? I asked my farmer about them and she said, “Chervil. I knew you would appreciate it.” She’s right. For years, I’ve read about chervil but never saw it in any market. I made it the star of the show that night, sautéing some North Carolina shrimp with shallots and finishing them with lemon juice, butter and lots of chervil.
  • Some of the chervil remained for the next night’s mackerel. I lined the bottom of a baking dish with sliced shallots, fresh orange juice and lemon zest, put the fillets on top and slid the dish in the oven. When the fish was done, I topped it with a mix of basil, chervil, parsley, orange zest and butter, and let it all melt together.
  • I riffed off this fried brown rice with kale recipe by substituting bacon, jalapeño and black pepper for the ginger, lime and turmeric. I’d love to try the original version; I just didn’t want those flavors with my seafood dinners.
  • One day at the meat/dairy store at the farmers market, I saw a whole duck in the case and decided to splurge. On Sunday, I watched a couple of videos then sort of followed this recipe for roast duck with potatoes, figs and rosemary—but used dried figs and added half an orange to the “stuffing.” The skin didn’t get quite as crackly as I wished but it was still darn good.
  • My basil plants needed pruning so I made a big batch of whole wheat spaghetti with basil-pea pesto for lunch this week—a tasty way to garden.

Here are the educational events scheduled for next week. If you have a free webinar or event coming up, please send me the link before Wednesday evening the week before it’s scheduled. I’ll be happy to feature it as long as it’s not too product-centric.

Stay safe, stay well, take care.
