Daily Buzz: How to Last 100 Years

What makes one organization stand the test of time while others fail? Stable purpose, leadership, and a disruptive edge seem to be the difference-makers. Also: the hotel amenities that guests value.

What can organizations learn from others that have lasted for more than 100 years?

Harvard Business Review did a deep dive into seven organizations that have stood the test of time, including the Royal Academy of Music, NASA, and the New Zealand All Blacks rugby team. Researchers spent five years studying these organizations and found striking similarities between the groups, despite their disparate missions.

For starters, they have a stable purpose and want to shape society, not just react. “They are incredibly strategic, looking 20 to 30 years ahead, to understand how society is evolving, how they can shape it, and how they can get the talent to do this,” write Alex Hill, Liz Mellon, and Jules Goddard.

These long-lasting organizations also have leaders with long tenures—more than 10 years. “Not just at the top of the organization, but two or three levels further down too—where key knowledge and influence often sits,” says the article. “And they carefully manage leadership transitions, so nothing is lost along the way.”

Rethinking Hotel Amenities

What amenities do hotel guests really care about? The Center for Hospitality Research at Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration surveyed upscale hotel guests about more than 50 amenities to determine what respondents over- and undervalued both before their stay and once they arrived at the hotel.

“Specifically, automated check-in, in-room dining, spa, and fitness center were among the amenities ranked highly ahead of a hotel stay but which saw at least 20 percent less usage than anticipated,” writes Rob Carey for MeetingsNet.
