We Asked, You Answered: Frustrating Tech Headaches

From annoying gadgets to glitchy apps, frustration can surface almost anywhere you use technology. Here are a few tech headaches that association pros would love a cure for.

Technology does a lot to make life and work easier, but it can also get in the way—disrupting your workflow, interfering with your daily processes, even fouling your mood.

Everyone has a tech headache of their own. And it’s with that in mind that we recently asked our readers, “What drives you nuts about tech—and have you found any workarounds?” Here’s what a few had to say.

Lisa Levine

CEO, Energy Bar Association

Tech that drives me nuts:

Too many “reply all” emails that do NOT require a reply all. I’d love a workaround for this!

Having to re-log in several times a day to various systems due to “security.”

Tech that doesn’t integrate with others—such as a database that doesn’t integrate with an accounting package or an email platform that doesn’t integrate with the database, etc.

Project management software—most seem to be more work and less help.

Any software/tech that doesn’t integrate with social media platforms.

OK, so I have a lot of tech items that drive me crazy.

Joanna Colbourne, CAE

Senior Director, Education and Outreach, National Foundation for Infectious Diseases

The National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) hosts programs where we request that speakers/presenters use the NFID slide template. Inevitably, several don’t use the template or use an older version, so now we have to spend valuable pre-event “crunch time” updating slides. I wish there were an easier way to transfer content to a new template (size or colors) without losing formatting!

Courtney Kincaid, CAE

Vice President, Strategic Initiatives, Indiana CPA Society

Finding new solutions to bring our association up to speed with the Amazons of the world is a constant task. It drives me nuts when potential vendors fail to understand our business needs, overpromise, and underdeliver—and want to blame you. Discovery is such an important part of the tech world, and it’s often overlooked.
