Study: Robotics Presents Opportunity to Security Industry

Like other industries, research from the Security Industry Association shows that automation can help enhance the skills of human workers.

Automation is one of the biggest trends associations are facing, and the security industry is no exception. According to a new report from the Security Industry Association (SIA), the demand for robotics is growing fast, with an expected market growth of more than 20 percent over the next five years and more than 40 percent of survey respondents saying they had plans to use robots for security.

The research attributes the rise in security automation to the overall evolution of technology, as well as its potential to enhance the skills of security officers. Where humans have limitations in seeing in the dark, picking up signals, and sensing and responding to environment changes, robotic technologies can step in for increased security coverage, says SIA.

John Santagate, research director of service robots at the International Data Corporation, said in the press release that, like other industries, the increase in automation doesn’t signify a move to replace human security officers.

“The most important point to consider is that security robots are not meant to replace humans in the security operation,” he said. “Rather, they are meant to take on certain tasks and greatly enhance the capabilities of human security operators.”

The report also showed that robotics can strengthen the security systems in “soft targets,” such as malls and stadiums, by accommodating multiple sensor types and sensing requirements.

Overall, the findings aren’t far off from the automation changes happening in other industries, too: Automation is transforming jobs and the way people work, though the impact and the rate at which it’s happening are variable, according to ASAE ForesightWorks research on the topic.

“With security robots’ advanced capabilities and flexibility, it is clear that robotic technology presents an opportunity to the security industry and to our members,” said Don Erickson, SIA’s CEO, in the release. “This new report shares powerful insights on how robotic technology can help transform the industry and help enterprises operate more efficiently, solve challenges and effectively protect facilities, public spaces, and more.”
