Association Brain Food Weekly: 10.20.17

association brain food - professional development events

The weekly list of free professional development events for the association community…

association brain food - professional development events

More evidence that I only associate with the most successful companies: my clients keep getting bought. This week, we learned Higher Logic acquired Real Magnet and Informz. Maybe I’m a good luck charm? Listen to Higher Logic CEO Rob Wenger talk to DelCor Technology Solutions founder and CEO Loretta DeLuca about the deal.

As a CAE whose studying and exam experience is still imprinted in my brain, I can relate to this post from WBT Systems about motivating certification candidates. I like the distinction between learning goals and performance goals and the references to Dan Pink’s fascinating book, Drive.

I read two articles this week that look at robotics from different perspectives. One focuses on robots in the workplace with a close look at an office furniture factory in Michigan and a telecommunications equipment factory in China. This quote from one of the Chinese employees reinforces a necessary message about lifelong learning:

“We already went through several industrial revolutions—and we still have a job!” she said. “I think it’s people who haven’t lived through the industrial revolution who don’t understand this. The world changes. You constantly have to improve yourself to keep up.”

The other article centers on a scientist/artist in Japan who is exploring how to make androids more human, how to give these ‘beings’ human-ness so they can take on new roles in our lives.

I suppose robots will never feel the need to unplug. Some of the people responsible for making the web and phones so darn addictive are now worried by our shrinking attention span and becoming internet refuseniks.

Enough negativity! I’m excited about the ways machine learning can improve the customer (member) experience and, along the way, help organizations achieve their goals and increase revenue.

That’s it for good reads, now it’s time for this week’s list of free professional development for the association community.

If your organization has a webinar scheduled in the near future, please send me the link. I’ll be happy to feature it as long as it’s not too product-centric.
