Membership Hack: Mother’s Day Good Deed

The National Peace Corps Association encourages its members to buy gifts for Mom online. Each purchase is a chance to give back and do some good.

How to hack it? Before Mother’s Day (and many other holidays), your members most likely do some online shopping. And there’s a good chance they do some of it on Amazon.com.

This year, to celebrate Mother’s Day, the National Peace Corps Association signed up for the AmazonSmile program, a partnership that any association with a 501(c)(3) charitable organization can enroll in for free. Registered partners connect members to Amazon using a referral link. Then, when members click “buy,” a small portion of the proceeds (0.5 percent) is donated to the association’s charitable arm.

“It is just another way for us to promote NPCA and receive donations,” says Digital Content Manager Ana Victoria Cruz. “We spread the word mainly on social media and our e-newsletter.”

Why does it work? The AmazonSmile partnership is an easy way to collect small donations during peak holiday shopping periods. Because NPCA’s members serve in the Peace Corps around the globe and the association has affiliate and alumni groups worldwide, it’s likely that many members will shop via Amazon. “

What’s the bonus? NCPA also promotes its own online gift shop, where 100 percent of the revenue generated supports the Peace Corps and its related activities and programs. In its Full Circle Gifts program, sales of artisan products produced by local communities in active Peace Corps countries help to alleviate poverty.
