association brain food - learning and professional development

Your weekly list of free webinars and events for the association community…

association brain food - learning and professional development

Earlier this week, I finally read the new white paper from Elizabeth Engel and Sherry Marts, Include Is a Verb: Moving from Talk to Action on Diversity and Inclusion. Don’t be fooled, this is not a wonky paper. It’s an enjoyable fascinating read on a topic that’s still not understood everywhere in associationland (and beyond). Here are a couple of quotes that resonated with me, the first from Janet Bandows Koster, executive director of the Association for Women in Science:

“Don’t just jump on this because it’s trendy. To be successful, you need to consciously align your diversity efforts with the culture and strategic focus of your organization.”

And this one from the authors:

“A simple Google search returns more than 12 million results that demonstrate that increased D+I leads to increased innovation, better decision-making, faster and more creative problem-solving, better outcomes, and an improved bottom line. If thousands of Harvard Business Review, Fast Company, and Forbes articles and a raft of academic studies haven’t convinced you of this, a 20-page whitepaper won’t, either.”

Ha. I’d wager that many associations appoint a staff/member team to work on D&I because they think they should, not really understanding why it’s important and how it can impact their organization and people.

What else did I read this week?

This good post from WBT Systems: how to help members develop a learning habit. I have a serious reading habit that makes me more receptive to other professional development opportunities but I can see how many people might need a gentle nudge.

Ginny Hamilton at The Enterprisers Project shares seven ways to free up money for IT innovation. Now, if that’s not a topic near and dear to the hearts of every association professional, I don’t know what is.

And, when you get that money, you’ll want to read Aptify’s explanation of how a lack of standard, documented (emphasis on “documented”) processes wreaks havoc on technology selection and implementation. No doubt.

Now, here’s what you’re came for: the list of next week’s learning events. If your organization has a webinar scheduled in the near future, please send me the link. I’ll be happy to feature it as long as it’s not too product-centric.
