Daily Buzz: Marketing Tips From Romance Writers

How the Romance Writers of America capitalizes on content marketing strategy to create a flourishing industry. Also: A firsthand account of the Carr Fire.

Looking for content marketing inspiration? Take a hint from the Romance Writers of America.

RWA has helped to create a booming billion-dollar business—one whose books represent 34 percent of all fiction sales—all due to the organization’s smart marketing.

Unlike content marketing strategies that can feel formulaic, the entrepreneurial and collaborative methods RWA uses are what make it so successful, says Skyword’s Content Standard. Strategies deployed include everything from how-to content and learning resources to community building, year-round conferences, and value-driven outreach. And though you might not be a Harlequin romance reader yourself, there’s lots to learn from the way RWA leverages and packages its content.

Association Member Details Carr Fire Experience

The Carr Fire, which began in Northern California on July 23, is now the sixth most destructive fire in the state’s history. Curtis Newcomb, O.D., a member of the American Optometric Association, had to flee his home in Redding, California, and detailed his experience in a post published Thursday on AOA’s website.

“It looked like Armageddon,” Newcomb said. “This was an angry wall of flames. The entire sky was red, and the flames were so close; you could hear pine trees exploding and propane tanks blowing up. It sounded like a train coming through the middle of a shotgun showdown.”

To date, the fire has burned more than 131,000 acres, destroyed more than 1,000 structures, and killed at least six people—and is still burning.
