Best Benefit Ever: A Chance to Root for Your Home Team

Michigan social workers get an off-hours perk: discounted tickets to Detroit Pistons games for the upcoming season.

What’s the benefit? The National Basketball Association has returned to the front page, with the kickoff of the preseason and Monday’s announcement of a massive new broadcast deal. Members of the Michigan chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) can now enjoy the NBA hype courtside with discounted tickets to five Detroit Pistons games this year, including matchups against expected postseason contenders such as the Chicago Bulls and Washington Wizards. Discounted prices range from $15 to $45.

Why it works for members: Associations offer lots of practical member benefits, such as discounted shipping, assistance with healthier living, and employment matchmaking. But there’s something to be said for a benefit that helps members meet and mingle just for fun. Relationships forged at a basketball game may end up being just as valuable as those sparked at an industry roundtable.

Other benefits: That’s not to say NASW Michigan is lacking in traditional membership perks. It also hosts an extensive career center, provides resources and consultation on ethical questions, and offers discounts to events and workshops.
