Tuesday Buzz: Why Millennial Member Engagement Means Letting Go

Millennial member engagement isn't easy, but letting go of a little control could make things easier. Also: Instagram's latest feature takes more than a few cues from Snapchat.

Engaging younger audiences—a.k.a. millennials, those famous unicorns of new membership—is not the easiest thing to pull off.

So, how do you make that happen? According to consultant and author Jamie Notter, it’s important to realize that the best way to engage millennials is to embrace the fact that they like to be in charge of something. One way to do that is by giving them some creative freedom, Notter explains over at Association Success:

This generation has had a lot of power growing up—power to do things, to convene on their own terms, and to create. So if you have them in your system (like at an annual meeting), then intentionally give them some white space, and let them create stuff. Let them create their own programming or their own social gatherings, but within your environment. Does that feel like you’re giving up some control? Welcome to 2016.

Empowering your newest members could be a great way to keep them around for a little while.

Snapstagram?

Find Snapchat’s concept interesting but don’t want to lose your focus on Instagram? Fortunately, Instagram is on the case. On Tuesday, the Facebook-owned social network launched Instagram Stories, an ephemeral approach that has a lot of Snapchat’s DNA. So much that “blatant rip-off” and “clone” come to mind. But, hey, if you’re trying to expand your reach, might as well use that to your advantage.

The feature will come to Instagram accounts worldwide over the next few weeks.
