Association Brain Food Weekly: 4.24.20

Free professional development resources and events for CAEs, association staff and others in the association community

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

Free professional development resources and events for CAEs, association staff and others in the association community

Zoom fatigue—or is it? I’m reading a lot about “Zoom fatigue” these days, which concerns me because associations are relying on Zoom (and other web-conferencing platforms) to educate and connect members to each other. Evan Selinger says the problem isn’t Zoom fatigue, it’s mourning life as we know it. Makes sense.

Using Zoom for professional development. Selinger raises several good points to keep in mind as you plan virtual conferences and other online programs. WBT Systems also shares ideas specifically for preparing and engaging attendees and learners for virtual education via Zoom.

Survey re going virtual. Despite the uncertainty about face-to-face meetings in the future, according to an Association Laboratory survey (reported by Associations Now), only 57% of association leaders said they’re expanding investment in online education, 52% are looking into virtual conferences, and 62% plan on shifting content to a digital platform. Granted, this survey was published in March so maybe these percentages would be higher now, I hope so, or maybe the remaining associations are already invested in these platforms.

I’m thankful for the same silver lining that Dean West, FASAE, president and founder of Association Laboratory, sees: “Every day associations are discovering that they have both the capacity and the capability to do things differently and more successfully. And the crisis has generated a tremendous opportunity to experiment with new strategies and get rid of things that have not provided value for many years.”

Hosting virtual events. If you are hungry for more information about hosting virtual events, check out Matchbox Virtual Media’s blog. Arianna Rehak has written lots of good posts lately about going virtual.

Virtual event sponsorships. Your non-dues revenue doesn’t have to suffer when you move to virtual. I’ve seen lots of good articles about virtual event sponsorships, including this collection of 18 ideas from EventMB and five ways to drive greater value for virtual event sponsors from Trade Show News Network.

Hunger. Food banks are helping to feed kids who normally rely on school breakfasts and lunches as their nutrition for the day. You can help these kids out—as well as all the people, young and old, who have been laid off or lost their business—by supporting your local food bank. Find yours on the Feeding America website. If you’re in North Carolina, I hope you’ll support the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina.

Quick hits before we get to the list of this week’s free education:

  • Hey Zoom, here are some features people want! (Maddie Grant, Human Workplaces)
  • I am a flâneuse at heart, but no longer live in a city so don’t get to wander like I used to. But I can do it vicariously thanks to Rambalac who films his walks through the streets of Tokyo. I enjoyed this walk in East Shinjuku, especially those tiny alleyways.

Good eats—skip down to the list of free webinars if you’re not into cooking. Check out my weekly In The Kitchen posts for more.

  • I was watching Delicious Miss Brown on the Food Network and she made crab macaroni and cheese. I ordered crab right away from my fish store and made the recipe last Sunday. Wow. Cue horn fanfare… the highlight of the week.
  • I made chermoula to put on top of baked speckled sea trout. Chermoula is a mix of parsley, cilantro, mint, rosemary, lemon juice, garlic, and ground spices—fennel, cumin, white pepper—plus red pepper flakes and olive oil. You can use it for all kinds of things. Later in the week, I put it on steamed asparagus.
  • It’s strawberry season here. Jim brought home a big bucket from a local farm. He made fruit salad twice and I made a strawberry cake. If you make this, store it in the refrigerator, otherwise the strawberries might go off a bit.

Here are the educational events scheduled for next week. If you have a free webinar or event coming up, please send me the link before Wednesday evening the week before it’s scheduled. I’ll be happy to feature it as long as it’s not too product-centric.

Stay safe, stay well, take care.
