Conference Circuit: Studying Society

The American Sociological Association ’s 113th Annual Meeting begins this weekend in Philadelphia. Attendance is expected to exceed 5,000.

More than 5,000 researchers, educators, practitioners, decision-makers, and students involved in the scientific study of society will make their way to Philadelphia this week to share knowledge and new directions in research and practice.

Organization: American Sociological Association

Conference: 113th ASA Annual Meeting

Venue: Pennsylvania Convention Center

City: Philadelphia

Following preconferences and courses earlier in the day, ASA 2018 will start Friday evening with an opening plenary and welcome reception. The plenary session will feature a panel of university-based sociologists who will discuss the multiple ways in which emotions matter in racial affairs. Also on the agenda:

Prep work. A new addition to the meeting’s career center is Prep Talks, a series of short, dynamic presentations on an array of topics that will help job seekers at all stages of their search. Sessions include effective interview strategies for an academic job search, how to negotiate a contract, and best ways to apply to a teaching-oriented institution.

Get to know Philly. Attendees can sign up for six different offsite tours that will allow them not only to experience the city but also to talk to and learn from people who live and work there. The tour, led by local sociology professors, will cover everything from the city’s industrial landscapes to the Independence Seaport Museum.

Quiet time. For attendees who need a bit of alone time during what’s sure to be long days, ASA has designated comfort rooms in the convention center and one of the host hotels.
