As the largest mathematics meeting in the world, the 2015 Joint Mathematics Meetings of the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America adds up to a ton of numeric jargon and expertise. But what makes the event noteworthy even to those whose skills barely go beyond addition and subtraction is its focus on the way math is used across a range of disciplines, from history to sports to political science.

Attendees will gather in San Antonio, January 10-13, to talk about all things mathematical, as well as some unexpected topics. For example, guests can brush up on their knowledge of the mathematics and politics of military cryptography or attend a discussion about the effect of wind on the flights of golf balls and baseballs.

Teaching methods will be highlighted, with sessions on providing better instruction for introductory statistics and encouraging students’ curiosity and passion for math. Educators also can learn about active learning strategies and how to foster productive undergraduate research programs in their classrooms to inspire the next generation of experts.

The Week Ahead

January 11-14: The National Retail Federation’s 104th annual Big Retail Show in New York City is likely to live up to its name. Hundreds of retailers, from new companies to household names, will mingle and discuss the hottest industry trends. Prominent retail visionaries will give a number of keynotes and more than 575 exhibitors will show off their products and services.

January 13-15: The International Ticketing Association’s 36th Annual Conference and Exhibition in Denver brings entertainment ticketing industry professionals together to look at the skills and products that keep ticket sales thriving. Attendees with experience in ticketing, ticket distribution, and entertainment management for the arts, professional sports, college athletics, arenas, fairs, and festivals will be present.

Down the Line

January 21-24: The Association of American Colleges & Universities is celebrating 100 years of advancing liberal education with its annual meeting theme, “Liberal Education, Global Flourishing, and the Equity Imperative.” Members will meet in Washington, DC, and delve into some of the most challenging issues in education policy and equity, from connecting general education with students’ lives and society’s needs to increasing diversity and equity in science, technology, engineering, and math.
