What is SocialMention and what is its value?

Day 3:  The ChatterBachs Product Review Week continues.

Another tool that I discovered recently and have started using is SocialMention. (@SocialMention) developed by Jon Cianciullo (@jonnyjon).

From the Social Mention “About” page:  “Social Mention is a social media search and analysis platform that aggregates user generated content from across the universe into a single stream of information.  It allows you to easily track and measure what people are saying about you, your company, a new product, or any topic across the web’s social media landscape in real-time. Social Mention monitors 100+ social media properties directly including: Twitter, Facebook, FriendFeed, YouTube, Digg, Google, etc.”

The first key here is “what people are saying about you, your company, a new product, or any topic”; you can do a search on anything of interest to see what is being said in social media on the subject.   The second key is “real-time”; for customer-service issues or opportunities, this has tremendous potential.  You can see the source such as LinkedIn, StumbleUpon, or one of the 100+ sites referenced above, users, and a link to that site or page.  A useful feature is also to organize by source rather than by time or date or being able to narrow down the timeframe, although I would like to see an option between 1 hour and 12 hours.

SocialMention also has scores or ratings for Strength, Sentiment, Passion, and Reach.  Even with the definitions, I have a difficult time understanding the value of these numbers without relevant reference points.  It’s a great concept, though; and I could certainly see it being developed further.  On the left-hand side, one can drill-down further to get a closer look at sentiments, keywords, users, hashtags, and sources associated with this search.  On the sentiment, I noticed that for a search on ChatterBachs over the past 12 hours that 2 were in the negative classification, apparently because of the words “bad” and “sucks“, but it didn’t pick up on the nuances of playful banter or the fact that these weren’t references to ChatterBachs itself.  The keywords associated with the selected topic can be revealing; also knowing the users who are interacting or replying to this topic and hashtags that are predominant in this search can also lead to a wealth of information.

Lastly, I signed up for email alerts to be delivered daily on a couple of searches.  I can still go and do real-time searches anytime, but this means the information is at least coming to me once a day.  This can also be set up as an RSS feed.

Here are a few of the excerpts from the email I received this morning, basically capturing the social media activity from yesterday related to ChatterBachs  Again, as you can see, the source, link, date, and time are provided in this format:
