Mizz Information: Social Media Software + Silos Redux

Mizz Information

Social Media Software + Silos Redux. The big thing these days is social media software–everyone wants to get into the game. Whether it’s social media monitoring, social media management, social CRM, community platforms, social media measurement, the bottom line is that every company seemingly wants a piece of the social media pie. Vocus added social media monitoring.

Lunchtime Links: Social Media Isn’t Just for Young People

Associations Now

A new report says older people increasingly use social media to connect online. It’s no secret that younger generations rely on social media to communicate with friends and connect with the causes they care about.

Mizz Information: 31% of Associations Have Online Communities.

Mizz Information

I just read a post about an upcoming membership marketing benchmarking report, specifically detailing the part of the report that addresses social media use by associations. The report surveyed 700 associations and, according to the summary of the upcoming report, among associations with over 20,000 members, 31% reported having a private social network. Yet, according to this report, there are a lot of associations with private social networking platforms.

What Smart Associations Do Differently

Association Adviser

In response to this challenge, some associations have made impressive gains in their adoption of technology, particularly in the areas of mobile, social media, video, online learning, connectivity and more. Since 2005, the two groups had jointly produced a successful annual show and realized that many constituents knew each other and were members of both associations. Video is also a valuable form of content, learning, non-dues revenue and even membership leads.

Mizz Information: Why the Foursquare/AmEx Deal is the Least Likely.

Mizz Information

Why the Foursquare/AmEx Deal is the Least Likely Thing to Prove Social Medias ROI. Really--were all looking to a company that makes no money off a deal like this to prove the ROI of social media? Looking for social media ROI case studies that actually make sense?

Steve Jobs and the Focus of the CEO

The product starts valuing the great salesmen, because they’re the ones who can move the needle on revenues, not the product engineers and designers. The phrase that jumps out at me is “they’re the ones who can move the needle on revenues.” There’s nothing wrong with moving the needle on revenues of course. I’m no business mogul, but I’m fairly certain that revenue is a key piece of organizational health. Social Media.

Mizz Information: What Does a Washington Post Blogger Resigning.

Mizz Information

As someone who manages the blog for a large organization, as well as runs their social media activities, I can absolutely feel this bloggers pain, and I know there are tons more just like me who share this same experience. There is little or no guidance--after all, they hired you to show them the way with this newfangled digital/social media stuff. Print ad revenue is down and continuing to diminish, while online ad spend is up and projected to continue to rise.

Mizz Information: Facebook Fails are Mounting

Mizz Information

Despite the media frenzy over Facebooks impending IPO , all isnt 100% rosy for Facebook. Two things Ive recently read highlight what I consider to be pretty big fails on Facebooks part, and, were I considering investing in Facebook (which I never in a million years would do), would give me pause: Social Readers are collapsing. The Washington Post and other publications invest time and money rolling out social reader apps. 85% of Facebooks 2011 revenue came from ads.

Mizz Information: Huffington Post Bloggers Aren't the Only Ones.

Mizz Information

Almost a year ago I pondered what would be the tipping point for people deciding theyre tired of providing free content to media outlets who then make money off their free labor. If I had to guess, Id say right about the time when statistics start to show that websites are generating a bunch of revenue as a result of the content users are providing for free." Mizz Information: Musings On Influence in the Association Space

Mizz Information

In the association space, where there are so many smart leaders-- both those who are active online in social media world and those who arent--and where so much business is done based on word-of-mouth recommendation and actual influence that cant be measured by a BS algorithm that people game for fun--were honestly just supposed to embrace a top 10 list based on Klout score? Especially since you are one of the more influential social media people. Mizz Information.

In my opinion, there are a few things they could have done to make this program more of a success: Technology --I know Im possibly more the exception rather than the rule, but IMHO, its 2011--why would you launch what is basically an online membership category and use online forums instead of an online social networking platform? Advertising/Revenue --I have to admit Im kind of sad to see this thing fail because I think it could have been a success. Mizz Information.

Mizz Information

In the case of United Breaks Guitars, the figure of $180 million has been tossed around, which I think is a bit of a reach, but even without the drop in stock price allegedly caused by the incident, there are certainly costs associated with managing a brands reputation in this age of social sharing. United, how much are you paying for social media monitoring, Tweeting , triaging issues, and responding? Mizz Information. Tuesday, June 21, 2011.

Mizz Information

And if their own content isnt enough to drown members, how many associations also rent their email lists as a source of revenue? Will they be able to justify any potential lost revenue from less email marketing and/or list selling for the iffy ROI of content curation? They are not hiring for social or digital--again, for the most part--and when they are it is usually at a junior level.
