Association Brain Food Weekly: 11.17.17

education for the association community

The weekly list of free educational events for the association community…

education for the association community

Next week, I find hard to believe, is Thanksgiving week so only a few webinars are scheduled. I’m taking that as permission to make my recommended reading list a bit longer than usual.

Now that the holiday season is heading our way, ready or not, we’re all going to need time for white space. But you know what? We need white space throughout the year, and Jocelyn Glei explains why and how you can get it.

Some myths, like Santa Claus, are worth perpetuating, others not so much—like these 12 adult learning myths that WBT Systems debunks this week. Make sure you base your association’s educational programs on science, not fiction.

Smart tech companies, like my clients, ahem, understand the value of educating their prospects and customers—not just about their products, oh no, but about topics that help customers do their jobs, get ahead in their careers, and grow their organizations. Kathleen Kruse at Talented Learning explains how to put this strategy to work for your company.

Ok, so you’re on board with content marketing, but then you run into the silo problem. Marcia Riefer Johnston at Content Marketing Institute writes about tearing down silos to create a culture of content.

If you’ve ever attended a chapter leadership conference, you’ve seen transformation in action. It’s really cool to see members making friends with their peers and watch as lifelong relationships develop. Billhighway goes into the benefits a chapter leadership conference brings to the national association and its chapters and gives advice on designing the conference program.

And what’s a conference without an app? I can’t imagine it. Eventpedia shares how an event app can drive revenue both during your conference and beyond it.

“In the hunt for reader revenue, publishers give micropayments another look,” says Digiday. We’re talking a few dollars a transaction here. I wonder, do micropayments have a role in the relationships associations have with their constituents? Maybe if membership becomes less important. Who knows, something to ponder.

If you find yourself with ponder time during the upcoming long weekend, why not check out a few podcasts from the association community:

And one more that has an association connection:

Now it’s time for this week’s list of free professional development for the association community. If your organization has a webinar scheduled in the near future, please send me the link. I’ll be happy to feature it as long as it’s not too product-centric.
