Association Brain Food: 1.20.23

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

winter in Yellowstone – inspiration for my weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association communityUnpredictable chaos. The recent air traffic shutdown is an example of BANI come to life. BANI stands for Brittle, Anxious, Nonlinear, and Incomprehensible. Futurist Jamais Cascio developed this framework to help us make some sense of the chaotic and unpredictable world we now live in. WBT Systems shares his description of BANI and his “adaptive strategies” that can help you prepare your association and members for more unpredictable chaos.

Association strategic drivers. McKinley Advisors shares the top strategic drivers they identified last year while working with clients on strategic plans. These drivers can serve as touchstones reminding you of essential focus areas. Here are a few: strengthening and communicating membership value propositions, agile and transparent management and governance, and business model transformation.

Sponsorship strategy. In this comprehensive guide to tiered and à la carte sponsorship models for in-person, virtual, and hybrid events, EventMobi suggests how to price, sell and deliver sponsorships, measure ROI, and craft a post-event report for your corporate partners.

Smart NFTs. Don’t roll your eyes and skim by this one. In Peter Diamandis’ series of metatrends, #11 is the emergence of the Metaverse and Web3. He defines these terms along with DAOs, identity, and NFTs. The most fascinating part of this article for me are the potential applications of Smart NFTs. Imagine how Smart NFTs might enhance the member/customer experience.

Online community. The most valuable ASAE membership benefit for me is Collaborate, our online community. If your association doesn’t offer an online community for members, Nimble AMS may change your mind. Learn how an online community can help you attract, engage, and retain members, and get a useful plan for launching and managing a community.

Good eats

Skip down to the list of free educational events if you prefer takeout.

Long ago, I was part of a Portuguese-American family. They taught me how to enjoy the pleasures of the table. Caldo verde made a frequent appearance on that table. This recipe for Portugal’s national soup from David Leite is excellent. I chose the linguiça and kale option, which is how Rosa and Teresa always made it.

On the side, a recipe I completely forgot about and now plan to make again and again during soup season: cheesy cauliflower breadsticks. I added my leftover smoked gruyere to the parmesan and topped the “bread” with mozzarella. So easy!

My seafood share is back on so we had wahoo with creamy jalapeno sauce one night and yelloweye snapper with a Mediterranean-style sauce featuring ouzo another night. The bottle of ouzo is almost gone! I’ve been enjoying it so much in these fish dishes, I’m tempted to buy another. On the side, the usual roasted broccoli with red onion and garlic powder.
