Keri_Mellott: #Socialmedia gives companies/brands a platform to speak and 2 mics – one for them, and one for the audience. (on #SMfastfwd, 12.08.10)

BSStoltz: #SM amplifies my who I can reach and who reaches me – and shortens the learning curve. (on #SMfastfwd, 11.10.10)
NCCmeet: Interactions with the public are selfless. SM is not to promote yourself but to share info and expect nothing in return (on #SMfastfwd, 11.10.10)
I disagree … if you expected nothing in return, you shouldn’t be doing it. Possible expected returns:
– improve audience perception of and attitude toward you
– change audience’s behavior (buy your product/service; speak positively about you to others
– resolve problems, improving reputation
– product/service ideas
You misinterpreted this quote. Being selfless by sharing information means you respond giving advice or guiding them in the right direction. If you read Trust Agents, social media is about helping people, providing customer service… with out asking , ‘what’s in it for me?, Anyone who is successful at social media marketing knows this.. and you’re willing to help complete strangers because you want to!
I think you are both correct. I believe Sarah’s comment should be the guiding light, and while not always asking ‘what’s in it for me?’ when it comes to social media marketing, there is always the underlying theme behind ‘customer service’ – obtaining customers.
Keri_Mellott: Quicker responses help the public engage with brands in real time. Adds to cust satisfaction & smiles (on #SMfastfwd, 11.10.10)
MathenyJenny: Social is about being personal & having a convo. W/O that personal touch, social will fail. (on #SMfastfwd, 11.10.10)

That is the different between participation and engagement. Thanks @robbinphillips for saying the above quote!
How true! Whether in person or utilizing SM, you must always seek to be relevant — contribute, ask questions, learn, share.

I have met some wonderful people on twitter and then was able to meet them in person. This would have not been possible without this social media platform. I am thankful for the opportunity to reach out and connect with those around me that I never knew existed…

For those who have never chatted Wednesdays at 12 PM in #SMfastfwd, it’s perfectly placed on Wednesday’s – a mid-week chat, that helps us (creative SM people) feed off each other for awesome ideas and gives you that second-wind to get through the rest of the week!
“One of the best analogies I know about social networking is that networks like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc. are like going to parties. One advantage different from a normal party you attend in person is that social networks obviously let you meet more people, and geography is not a barrier. I’ve heard many people say Twitter is a waste of time, but if your customers are there, why aren’t you?”

“With social media, you can get answers to questions you never thought to ask” (quoted by @loicmo)
thought I’d add that to the mix. What a great list, Jay!
Here’s my favorite: “See social media as the greatest disruptive gift you’ve ever been given,” said Hank Wasiak @hankwasiak.
Hi Theresa. Thanks for the nice words and for nominating my quote. Glad you agree. Social Media is a gift of disruption that has changed marketing communications for the better, forever. Make the most of it.
Be well
Hank Wasiak
People are going to be talking about you (on social media) … you will get the best results by joining the conversation
Traditional Media is a marketing monologue. Social Media is a marketing dialogue. This is a paradigm shift that scares… many traditional marketers
#SM is about awareness, immediacy, and reach. But the oldest rule applies, “Garbage In, Garbage Out.”
Mick Cope: “People who optimize their personal capital can change their world”
“How can you squander even one more day not taking advantage of the greatest shifts of our generation? How dare you settle for less when the world has made it so easy for you to be remarkable?” – Seth Godin, Seth’s Blog
“Twitter represents a collective collaboration that manifests our ability to unconsciously connect kindred voices through the experiences that move us. As such, Twitter is a human seismograph.” – Brian Solis, Principal of FutureWorks
“The hardest thing for marketers is to turn over the brand experience to the community and let them define it.” – Eric Erwin, executive vice president of marketing and product development at Wilton
Social Media provides an opportunity to discover and capture the pulse of conversations through the transparency it provides. The trick is being able to find the meaningful content with the vast maze that is generated.
