Association Brain Food Weekly: 8.17.18

Free professional development resources and events for CAEs, association staff and others in the association community

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

Free professional development resources and events for CAEs, association staff and others in the association community

If you’re heading to ASAE Annual, keep an eye out for me and please let me know if you read Association Brain Food. I’m telling you, it will make my day, no exaggeration. When evening approaches and I’m still working on this (hello!) instead of starting dinner, I think back on those moments and persevere.

I haven’t figured out my ASAE Annual schedule yet but when I find time to do that, probably at the airport the way things are going, I will consult the crowdsourced event list that KiKi L’Italien starts up each year.

“When everyone is offering membership, you have to go a step further than everyone else,” said Ernie Smith in Associations Now. All kinds of people and businesses are competing for the time and attention of your members and prospects—and many of them are now offering a membership of sorts. Ernie keeps you up to speed on all these membership happenings.

You’re sure to find several useful ideas in a recent Billhighway post about helping your chapters build a leadership pipeline.

How about building a better sponsorship pipeline too? James M. Personius at Association Media & Publishing explains why you need to get rid of the tiresome platinum-gold-silver-bronze sponsorship tier model.

Have you ever wondered what your technology vendor’s project manager does? Wonder no more. WBT Systems discusses the critical role of the LMS project manager—your “significant other” during implementation.

A few quick hits before we get to this week’s list of free webinars:

  • Did you notice Facebook got rid of its Friend List Feeds feature for mobile devices? How can that be helpful to users? I relied on those every time I went onto Facebook. Oh wait, we don’t matter, we’re the product, not the customer, I keep forgetting. Facebook is becoming less and less useful. (CNET)
  • LinkedIn is making itself less useful too. They’re eliminating all kinds of group moderation and notification features. Maggie McGary, as usual, has all the details. Side note: I can’t even remember the last time I looked at any of my LinkedIn groups, so there’s that. (Mizz Information)
  • Phishing alert: Your package is on its way, but not the one you expected. This one’s a package of pain. (KnowBe4)

Off-topic: Check out my Grabbing the Gusto blog for posts about the recipes I’ve made recently or plan to make soon.

Here are the educational events scheduled for next week—not much because of ASAE Annual, I suppose. If your organization has a free webinar or event coming up, please send me the link. I’ll be happy to feature it as long as it’s not product-centric.
