National Hispanic Heritage Month 2021

September 15-October 15 marks National Hispanic Heritage Month. If you haven’t had a chance to hear the voices and check out the stories of Hispanic/Latinx association pros, check out the story project at ASAE.

I want to highlight this for a couple of reasons. The first is the obvious: to pay tribute to the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched us, our society, our country and – I must add – our associations.

Equally important is related to raising awareness around how data about Latinos may be skewed and that isn’t good for any of us (read the NPR article).

Another less obvious reason is to highlight how associations can create space for difficult conversations, lift up the voices least heard and inject leadership needed to be a catalyst for change. The story project and the Hispanic Association Executives microcommunity on ASAE’s Collaborate network [ASAE member login required] are replicable examples. The story project, complete with interactive video gallery built using Gather Voices’ The Hive, is also a microvolunteering, member engagement opportunity.
