Association Brain Food: 4.12.24

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

a river winding its way through the green cliffs of Iceland – inspiration for my weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association communityI would love to live
Like a river flows,
Carried by the surprise
Of its own unfolding.

– Fluent by John O’Donohue from Conamara Blues

(hat tip to Swiss Miss for sending this poem my way)

Attendee attention. Distraction is an occupational hazard for all of us. Even well-meaning learners who’ve paid for online courses and conferences are apt to click away if their attention wanes during your program. TopClass LMS shares 15 tactics for keeping your attendees’ interest and attention.

Gen Z education. Tracy King at InspirEd says Gen Z has different ideas for how they want to learn, work and build a career—and she has the research to back that up. Your professional development programs must adapt to their traits, values and expectations. If you’re wondering where to start, she has some questions for you to consider.

SMS marketing. Text Request explains how to create an SMS (text) strategy that aligns with your association’s marketing strategy. They also offer advice on building your subscriber list, sending effective SMS marketing campaigns and staying in compliance with regulations.

Member recruitment. Katrina Ciccarelli McAfee at Association Analytics shares a three-step strategy for improving new member acquisition. She explains how to get in front of prospects, make an impression on them and communicate the value of membership.

Staff meetings. When Zoom meetings became a thing, I saw lots of posts describing best practices for online meetings. But if your office is backsliding into bad meeting habits, then you’ll want to share this post from Nir Eyal.

Scholarly events data. Ex Ordo looks at events data through the lens of the research lifecycle. They describe how data can help you better understand your society’s community and promote the value of your events, journals and programs.

Remote/hybrid work. New research from TechSmith reveals that three out of four workers haven’t been trained for the shift to flexible working arrangements. Have you trained your employees for remote/hybrid work? What about your managers?

Sponsorship. Corporate marketing budgets are tighter and sponsors are no longer satisfied with logo displays and podium mentions. Lead Marvels shares advice from sponsorship consultants Bruce Rosenthal and Lori Zoss Kraska on what sponsors now seek in partnership deals. They also tell the stories of two association executives who generated more revenue after changing their approach to sponsorship.

You never grow old at the table

We loved Michael Ruhlman’s flavor-packed braised chicken thighs in a Thai green curry sauce from his cookbook, How to Braise. I served them over brown rice made in the pressure cooker.

Another night, bluefish in a white wine tomato basil sauce. I used pesto from my freezer instead of fresh basil.

Fresh swordfish doesn’t need much help, but I topped my pan-fried steaks with lemon zest, a tiny bit of fresh oregano and thyme, and a sprinkling of fennel pollen. On the side, a green cabbage sauté with ham, chard stems, onion, roasted red bell pepper, sun-dried tomatoes, garlic, and Better Than Bouillon ham broth.

Over the weekend, I made Rick Bayless’ charro (cowboy) pinto beans in the pressure cooker for breakfast burritos with fried egg, salsa verde, greens (if I have them) or avocado and hot sauce.
