learning events for the association community

Many of us, after enjoying a four-day weekend, now have to reconcile ourselves to the usual two-day affair. Luckily, you can make your weekend feel longer than it really is by seeking out newness. This article from Science of Us explains how our perception of the passing of time works.

If you’re wondering how AI will change the way your organization interacts with members and customers, check out this panel discussion (video) or its recap about the future of AI and the customer experience.

I’m not worried about being replaced by AI because I have intuition, emotional intelligence, and social intelligence plus the creativity to make sense of and connections between all the things I know and sort of know. Basically, I have good human skills and I bet you do too.

Many of us will be okay according to this Aeon article because “human jobs in the future will be the ones that require emotional labor: currently undervalued and underpaid but invaluable.” Buff up on the Golden Rule, get your soft skills sharpened and put your ego in check if you want to make a good living in the future.

I worry about all the young people who spend hours every day playing video games, working in crap jobs, and not having the drive to make anything of their lives. What will become of them? On the other hand, video games can also inspire and help people explore new skills, like these kids from Northern Ireland who use Minecraft to learn about architecture and construction. Wow. Now, that’s cool.

If your association is only using your learning management system (LMS) for online courses and other professional development programs, you’re missing out on additional ROI, says WBT Systems. They suggest ten additional and unconventional ways to get more value from your LMS.

I’m intrigued by the Patreon platform—it provides a way for fans to support creatives, like one of my favorite podcasters, with small monthly donations. Billboard says, “In 2016 there were 35 Patreon creators who made more than $150,000.” And this year, Patreon is on track to facilitate $150 million in payments to creatives—another example of the collaborative economy where the middleman is replaced by a technology platform.

If your organization has a webinar scheduled in the near future, please send me the link. I’ll be happy to feature it as long as it’s not too product-centric.
