Member communications. Help yourself and others benchmark member communication efforts and strategies by participating in Association Adviser’s 10th annual Association Communications Benchmarking Survey. The survey closes Friday, April 30. Participants get the first look at the report in July.

Spring cleaning association-style. WBT Systems suggests eleven areas probably in need of decluttering in your association, your work life, and your mind. They recommend reframing decluttering as creating space for something new, not just getting rid of things, and suggest starting with the mental clutter inside your head.

Burnout. Please read this Twitter thread from Irving Washington, CEO of the Online News Association, about burnout, especially if you’re a staff or volunteer leader. Much of what he and his commenters say about newsrooms also applies to associations.

Event legal issues. Event Farm asked a lawyer, public health expert, and event planner about vaccination requirements, waivers, codes of conduct, health screenings, and other legal issues on the minds of associations. Read their post to get answers to your legal questions and different perspectives on the assumptions driving your event decisions.

Virtual volunteers. At Associations Now, Wesley Carr, CAE, director of stakeholder engagement at the Regulatory Affairs Professionals Society, describes how they’ve rebuilt their approach to volunteering during the pandemic and shares seven ways they’re engaging virtual volunteers.

Speaker diversity. George Miller, CAE, senior consultant at McKinley Advisors, outlines the steps to take to increase the diversity of your conference speakers, and describes what they did when they encountered session chairs with homogenous networks.

Content strategy. A content strategy can help you break down department silos and provide a framework for all the content coming out of your association. Sherry Budziak, founder and CEO of .orgSource, explains the difference between content strategy and content marketing—and how they relate—and suggests how to get started.

Good eats

Skip down to the list of free webinars if you prefer takeout. If you’re a home cook, check out the weekly In The Kitchen posts on my Grabbing the Gusto blog.

  • I love this chipotle salmon recipe, but we get so much local fish from our seafood store that I hardly ever buy salmon, so I made it with golden tilefish instead. On the side, a mix of greens (chard, pac choi, radish, and others) sautéed with red onion, red bell pepper, and poblano pepper. I love having sweet potato and chipotle on the same plate, so I nuked a huge sweet potato and finished it in the toaster oven.
  • I got a great deal on Masonboro oysters so we had steamed oysters (again) with a dipping sauce of brown butter, lemon juice, and hot sauce. On the side, frozen onion rings, just because.
  • I doubled this recipe for spicy pork with asparagus and chile, and added broccoli and carrots to the veggie mix. On the side, brown rice with diced onion, broccoli stem, carrot, and garlic. Now I’m enjoying all the leftovers for lunch.

Here are the educational events scheduled for next week. If you have a free webinar or event coming up, please send me the link before Wednesday evening the week before it’s scheduled. I’ll be happy to feature it as long as it’s not too product centric.
